I have recently adopted an adult female neutered Bengal, she was used for breeding then no longer wanted. I have a neutered female Bengal cross already in the house. Newbie has only been with us 5 days and has settled in well so far, although she is quite nervous she is very friendly too.
My problem is that she seems to want to rub herself in the litter box all the time! It is normally the one that neither of them choose to use but its leaving her all dusty and mucky!
Is there a reason she is doing this? I realise she will need a lot longer to fully settle but is there any way I can deter her from doing it without scaring her away from the tray?!
She looks more playful than anything while she's doing it, rolls on her back and rubs in it!!

I've never heard of this ... could be just a quirk she has. Hopefully, once she gets settled in, this behavior will stop. I don't know how a cat could actually enjoy rolling around in their litter box. You might want to brush her pelt and give her some massages. She's getting something from the box that she wants ... if you substitute that, then she should stop.

What sort of litter are you using?

I would try getting a small rug with a scratchy texture, throw some catnip on it and try to direct the behavior there. You could try changing litter but I would try to get her to roll around somewhere else before potentially messing up both cats litter habits.

I actually just posted a similar question. My new kitten (also female) loves to roll in her litter box. Mostly right after I change it and it is fresh, but she seems to love playing and rolling around in there. Funny to see yours does too. I would be curious to know what brand you use. I wonder if they just really like the smell?

I buy the big bulk bags from pets at home of their own brand stuff, which they don't seem to mind and neither will mess outside of the tray.
It was definitely more of a playful behaviour. I bought a rubber brush to groom her and she likes that but was still going silly rubbing herself in the tray, getting all dusty and her coat looked and felt horrible. I took away the spare tray just for a trial period as my other cat prefers to go out anyway and So far she has not rolled in the tray she uses to toilet in so maybe she didn't see that as a toilet!!
That is funny that your cat does the same xtannerzx! Have you managed to find anything that helps? I'm just glad it wasn't the used tray she liked!!

Bengalkitty will go bonkers in his trays after I clean them all, especially if he has a scatty moment after. I used a basic wood pellet which smells quite nice when it's fresh and will often hear kitty rolling around and digging just after they've all been done before flouncing out and glaring at us all for laughing at him.
