I apologise if this is in the wrong section, but I was hoping for some advice/recommendations on litter. The breeder my kitten is coming from uses Tidy Cat for her adult cats and Yesterday's News for the kittens. The Yesterday's News is pellet form, which I had never seen before (this will be my first cat). Would it be ok to switch to a different litter? If so, how long should I wait, and do you do it gradually like when you are changing food and just start mixing in more and more of the new kind in with the old? The pellet form seems a bit weird to me, I can see how you could easily just scoop out the poos, but how could you scoop out the pee? Wouldn't it just mix and soak in to all of the surrounding pellets? I was thinking a clumping type litter that is flushable would be great, then I can just scoop and flush whenever he goes. I've been looking at Harvest Ventures Better Way litter, World's Best and Swheat Scoop. Does anyone have experience with those? Are they good/bad? Thanks so much.

I've used Tidy Cat for years because it clumps so well and controls odor and all that. But it's clay-based, so not very environmentally sound. I'm actually going to try to switch them over to one of the grain-based ones in the coming month. I bought two big bags of it (forget the brand) and plan to just slowly attempt the switch-over one litterbox at a time (they have 4).

I tried "World's Best" a year or two ago and wasn't impressed. It was very "dusty" and clumped very poorly. I now refer to it as "World's Worst". Other people swear by it though... *shrug*

As far as transitioning goes, I rolled the dice with mine and just immediately transitioned them to what I wanted them to use. Actually, I tried for a week with the pellet stuff that Neytiri used at her breeders, but couldn't stand it (too smelly and difficult to manage). An abrupt change though of course is a risk with any cat. Glad in my case it worked out

We use Worlds Best - use it with automatic litter boxes and it works great.

I use Swheat litter. It is all natural (it is manufactured of wheat), it clumps well and you can actually through flush it in toilet :)

I don't know about mixing a clumping cat litter with the pellets. That might be a tad messy! I'd simply roll the dice and fill the litter box with the new litter. He obviously knows where to go ... he may use it without any problem. There are so many types of litter out there. It's a toss up as to what he might like. I've always used Cat's Pride -- they have various types -- flushable, non-flushable, and Raiden has been fine with using it.

Maybe if I just put the new litter in his box from the start but add a baggie of litter from the breeder's house it would help?

I use one called bio-catolet it's recycled paper made into small pellets, it's completely dust free and no perfume to it, it soaks up the wee really well and hardly any comes out of the box on feet

I don't think mixing the pellets with a clumping litter is going to work. It will make a much larger mess. I would try to do a complete change over -- but, I'd add another litter box with the new litter and keep the old litter box out -- just to avoid any accidents. See if your kitty will use the new litter! You may be surprised that it all goes smoothly. A second litter box can always come in handy.
