Of an evening, when I am relaxing on the sofa, my boy Simba will often look at me to check if I am watching him, then he very cheekily starts to chew on the flower arrangement I have in the living room. I used to say "no" and his response would be to just stare at me, blink, then recommence destroying my flower arrangement.
I've found that distracting him is the best course. Picking up a toy, asking him to come to me and speaking to him in that ridiculously squeaky mumsy tone I regularly find myself using with the cats. But this works quite well. They are just over a year old and not as destructive as they were at first.
That said, I do not give my cats free reign of the house. They would get into total mischief. I'm afraid that when I am out at work, they have their "cat room". When I am at home doing housework or just relaxing then I tend to keep them in whatever room I am in so I can keep a close eye on them. This arrangement seems to suits them well as they love to be with me. At mealtimes/bedtime then they go back to their cat room. I'm hoping the cat enclosure will be ready soon because they really need a bit more space to claim as their own. xx
