My two year old male Bengal cat started to poop outside the litter box. What became a random now becoming a daily routine. I had him checked at vet, but he did not find anything wrong or sickness. I clean his litter box every day. This started about two three months ago, and now I have limited access to all rooms with carpets. He poops everywhere even when his litter box was cleaned up every single day in past four weeks. I am going to take him to the vet tomorrow again. He does have normal poop, no diarrhea. I changed litter sand, but did not help. It started to affect relationship within the family and our feeling toward this otherwise very lovely creature. We do not know what to do at this point. How to force cat back to the litter box? Why he goes outside and refuses to poop in the sand? It is a permanent issue? Do we need to give him away because he is unhappy in the house?

Does he urinate in the litter box? Brian has offered some wonderful suggestions and pretty much covered it all. Absolutely get a second litter box. Make sure it's large enough for the cat. Many cats do not like covered litter boxes. You said you're taking him to the vet again and the first time the vet didn't find anything wrong with him. Did you bring a stool sample with you?

If a cat has faithfully been using a litter box, when they stop, it's a sign of a problem -- physical or emotional. Something has changed in the cat's world and only you know what that might be. I hope your vet offers you some suggestions, too. Also, cats can sense your feelings about them. You need to love on your kitty and keep your feelings toward him normal. Getting angry or punishing him is not going to help at all.

There was an episode of My Cat From Hell about a cat who pooped all over the house -- and adding the extra litter boxes really helped with that problem once they got the medical problem taken care of as there was blood in the stool.
