Collars

Any advice for collars and kittens? LOL.
Max has been very good and sat patiently for me to put his new collar on (never worn a collar before) but then when it was on he went mad scratching at it, doing backflips to try and get it off :lol:

So after 10 mins we took it off again. Is it best to keep trying for short periods of time or to put it on and leave it?

I have thought about having a collar for Sol as he goes out but I had 2 moggies for nearly 20 years and they had collars for approx half of their life. The fur on both of their necks wore away and never grew back. The collars were never to tight I could always get two fingers underneath. Having said that one of my mogs went walkabouts and I had a phone call from a woman that had taken him in and found his contact details on his collar.
I always took the bell off them though as I didnt like the thought of it ringing in their ears.

Sol has such soft fur I would hate to damage it.
has anyone else ever had this happen? Just curious

My Moggies always had a line round their necks from the collar. I was never sure if it was the fur actually wearing off or just a permanent "parting" caused by the collar flattening the fur in opposing directions.

Like you, I took the bells off - they drove me mad so I can't imagine what it would be like to have one round your neck all the time :lol:

As I said, I've opted not to have collars with my current brood at the moment. I do keep wondering whether I should though - the microchips are fine but rely on someone taking them to the vet and I do wonder if everyone would bother whereas they might phone a number from the collar.

because they also went outside they would roll in dirt and dust and this attaches to the collar and gets up under it. this creates a sandpaper action and slowly breaks down the fur with time. be it a tight collar or not. to prevent this changing the collars regularly and cleaning them and not using leather can help reduce this. also be sure the collars don't get wet or get any flea treatment on them this will also break down the furn round the neck.

Ahh interesting. I thought it was because they had had a collar for years.

I may be tempted now to put a collar on sol with his contact details on. he is chipped but I think people would tend to call teh contact details off a collar. A lot of non cat owners may not even know what a microchip is let alone take the cat to the vet to get them scanned :shock:

I have a collar for Perkin, but every single time I put it on him, no matter how tight (while still trying to keep it not TOO tight), he always seems to get his bottom jaw stuck in it...
