Sometimes our cats find stuff around the house to play with and I've seen a lot of creative ideas for cheap or free cat toys, so I was wondering what else might be out there that I haven't thought about yet. Here are some things I've tried that my cats seem to like:

- dry leaves, twigs, pine cones and other stuff brought in from the yard
- shoe string with the end tied into a knot
- anything they can kick and carry around, e.g. wine corks, bottle caps etc.
- old socks tied into knots or (even better) filled with catnip before being tied
- ping-pong balls, especially attractive if trapped inside the bathtub and/or floating on water
- straws, also very good for fishing out of water
- crinkled-up paper balls
- a large sheet of paper (e.g. newspaper, road map) spread over the floor that they can sit on or hide under
- cardboard boxes and paper bags in all forms and sizes
- empty toilet paper rolls, especially attractive if closed at the ends and holes punched into the sides to allow for filling with treats which are falling out during play

What are your cats favorite non-commercial cat toys?

Cardboard boxes, paper bags, empty cotton reels and plastic webbing from parcels are favourites with my lot. Oh, and empty crisp bags tied in a knot
