I had an interesting afternoon visiting a Birman breeder. Birmans are like Bengals in that they appear to be particularly susceptible to FIP along with the other breeds such as Abysinnian, Siamese, Rex breeds etc.

She lost 2 cats a couple of years ago to FIP and one of them was her stud boy at the time. When I told her that Max was the biggest of the litter, she said that always seems to be the case, the biggest of the litter is the one that gets it. I told her about the treatment he was receiving and she was cautious and not too optimistic. She agreed that there was a bit of a trade off between trying to treat Max but not letting him suffer, if that was what ended up happening. She was quite upset thinking about her own cats who she'd lost. She gave me some pointers of how to tell when he was obviously really struggling and when it was obviously time to let go. That said, she agreed that at this stage, we should do what we can, while we can.

I'll keep you posted and let you know what happens at the vets tomorrow.

Aww bless his gorgeous little face. I hope he's a little more comfortable now after having some of that fluid on his belly drained.
So sad to hear what you are going through - it must be so hard to know what to do, other than try all you can to help poor little Max.

Morning all,

I was working nights last night so didn't get home until 7am and was up again at 1030 to take Max to the vets for his treatment. During the course of the night he was meowing at the bedroom door a feew times apparently. This morning, it would seem he's become a little loose and has been weeing in a few different places. He's quite skinny now and it's really only his tum which gives him any girth. At one point this morning we were wondering whether it was right to let Max go through with this treatment, but we did decide to let the vet have the final say. Once at the vets she was much more upbeat, and said that it would take a a while for the treatment to kick in, and we wouldn't see results for a while. She's as uncertain as we are as to whether it will work or not, but she told us of what signs to look out for if we then think it's all pointless.

I told her about Millie too and our fears about dry FIP and showed her a photo of her with what look like some shadows on her eyes, and the vet thought she probably has an eye infection. She seems to have them closed in the light, which would also point to this. The vet we first saw gave us some creamy drops which were just impossible to get in unfortunately. Apart from that she's relatively bouncy in how she trots etc. She doesn't seem to be sneezing now, or certainly not as much. The odd occasion in the morning. Bit like me really, I think I'm allergic to mornings! She's not playful at all at the moment though and just likes to sit either in her hammock or on our laps. I'm sure she senses that he's ill, and it it were me, I wouldn't feel much like playing either.

I think it's a cliche'd case of taking each day as it comes now and waiting (and hoping) for some indication that the treatment is having an effect. We're trying not to leave them alone at any time now so we're there for them if anything happens.

I've only just read through this thread. This all sounds so unbearable - for you and little Max. I really hope he gets better from this - my thoughts are with you all.

I've been checking for updates. I think your doing the right thing in trying treatments. If the time comes that you need to make a decision you will know what to do. Give Max and Millie a big cuddle from me xx
