My girlfriend and I are first time Bengal owners and wanted to join this forum to share stories, learn more about the breed and behaviors and most importantly- advice!
We first decided we wanted to get bengals a few months ago when we moved in together. We wanted a pet but were not what kind of animal (i.e. cat, dog) until we came across a breeder local to us and saw pictures of our future kiddies! We were originally only going to get one but decided that with our work schedules, we wanted to avoid neglecting our kitten and give him a buddy to hang out with while we are away. We picked two brothers from the same litter and our breeder let us take them home at 8 weeks once they decided they were socialized enough, litter trained and eating wet food. (I know most disagree that taking kittens home at 8 weeks is early but I was unaware then.)
We have had our two little guys (Bengii & Simba) for two weeks now and they have acclimated nicely! They love to play all day by chasing eachother, playing in the cat tree we bought, playing with us and our toys we bought and lastly- the laser pointer! They have shown affection already by cuddling with us (on their terms), sleeping with us at night and purring.
They both get along great and have proven to be each others best friends which brings me to a not so much concern but question. With the two boys spending all day together until we get off work, will they become independent to the point where they will only bond with one another and we are just “humans that feed them” or will they still remain dependent on us and deem us to be loyal partners that they will continue to cuddle and sleep with? I am beyond happy that they have each other but also want to ensure that we will still have strong relationships with them. We play with them for a couple hours each day when we are home and before work. I am also in the process of clicker training them but am still searching for the right treat that they will eat!
I by no means want lap cats or else I would not have bought the bengal breed but I do want them to remain affectionate towards their human companions. Any advice or stories are appreciated!
Best,
Denis
