I just need some advice on what to teach my cat when I take him outside for the first time. I own a flat which has its own set of stairs down to my own front door that I do not share. Currently at the top of the stairs we have curtains that block off the stairs. If he ever tries to go under the curtain or go down the stairs we say NO and he comes back. Now we want to talk him for walks on a leash. I would be happy to walk him down the stairs and out the door but I dont really want to undo his training and make him a door dasher. We have got him way more used to being picked up, but not enough to walk him down the entirety of the stairs and out the front door.

What do you suggest we do? Teach him he can go down the stairs when the curtain is open and not when it is closed?

This time we let him walk out, here are some pictures for you guys to see. He took to it very well! I still need to decide what to do regarding letting him walk down the stairs/front door though.

He was absolutely fine. He was obsessed with the plants outside my front door and seemed to really enjoy it. He was just smelling everywhere and wanted to wander far! We had one panic moment where we walked through the gate at the front of my property and as soon as he heard the gate close he went bezerk and tried to run underneath it but obviously that couldn't happen when I had the lead. So we had to open the gate and unhook the lead but he got skittish so I picked him up and brought him back inside.

Im moving house in a couple of weeks to somewhere where its a bit more realistic to take my 2 out on the lead (I live in the middle of the city centre at the minute), so I am thinking about taking the plunge and getting them both outdoors. I am a bit nervous about it though and I have no idea how either of them will take to it!

Happy to hear your little one enjoys walks. First of all, it's difficult to "train" a cat! If the curtain is a problem, then I would pick up your cat and walk down the stairs. If he understands that being carried down the stairs means a trip outside, then he will let you carry him.

There isn't much to teach them once they get outside. They go where they want to go. And they will go farther and farther as they gain confidence in being outdoors. Raiden and I started off in our yard, then in our cul-de-sac and now we walk about 6 blocks total -- three to the park and back. I bring a large towel with me to sit when he decides to sit and to snap at a dog if one approaches unleashed.

Getting a bengal to walk on a leash is usually pretty easy, but it's a new contraption around their body and many don't like it. You never take a cat outside wearing a harness until they are used to wearing it inside. Your boy is stunning!! Just stunning!

When I try go on leash with my boys they behave like a physically disabled.
I try set the harness to different sizes, but it is always same. Rocky has swaying walk. And Rambo crawls on ground only. They have interest on flowers, grass, insects. But they haven't normal walk. But we have same harness like on photos of reckneps.

We try go on leash with harness each weekend on cottage.
Do you have anyone same problem? That your cats forget normal walk with harness :)

I don't know how people can even get collars on their cats. I tried to put a harness on my cats at 4 months old when I got them. One collapsed on the ground like a cripple the other wouldn't let me near her for days. I guess I should try it again, Blondie is my only hope. There is no harnessing Grace I am afraid.

He didn't like it to start, it was a mixture of putting it on when he was too sleepy to care and when my partner was hand feeding him chicken and he was too interested in her and the chicken to bother getting annoyed at me putting the harness on his belly. After repeating lots he finally doesnt care if we put the collar/harness on him.
