Hi! I have searched for the answer to my question on the forum before posting, since I know it's annoying to see the same questions pop up, but I didn't find exactly what I was looking for. Sorry if it's a repeat! We live in NYC, US and we want to take our bengals for short walks through the parks here or bring them to the beach to walk on the sand and see the ocean. We play with them almost throughout the entire day and spoil them with toys, affection and towers and perches but it's never enough! Thinking if we had some days where they go out and about, it might help their boredom. But I am wondering what they need before going on short walks. We would never take them off their harness and leash, so I was thinking a FELV vaccine would not be required. Would they need flea and worm protection? If so, would they also need tick and heart worm? Our vet recommended Revolution. I've read so many horror stories about bad reactions to different flea/heart worm protections that I almost want to forget the whole thing to avoid hurting them in some way. And our silver male bengal always has some problem going on with his health (all minor mostly stomach problems) so I'd be weary giving him anything anyway.

When considering vaccines, consider, also, that there is no guarantee your kitties will not escape their harnesses or even out the door of your home or car and past you.

I keep Quasar vaccinated for rabies and everything but leukemia, since this was excluded in his kitten contract AND my vet does not recommend it for our situation and location.

Quasar has escaped out the door a few times but he has never gone very far and we have always been able to catch him, so far. The escapes include one time that DH went to work while I was at work and accidentally did not fully latch the back door. I came home to an open door and a missing cat. Fortunately, he was out in the backyard running around like a maniac and came to the door as soon as I shook a box containing some dog kibble, his personal vice.

He also escaped his harness once, while we were sitting in the lobby of a hotel. He ran into a nearby banquet hall, much to my embarrassment and to much amusement of those attending an event in that room.

Enjoy your kitties. Get them out and about. Keep them healthy and safe.

You should do the flea/worm/tick protection even on indoor cats. Those creatures can be brought in by humans (except the worm). As for vaccines, I was hesitant about the FeLV vaccine on Raiden's last visit. The vet informed me that it can be transmitted if Raiden should come in contact with saliva from another cat -- even on a leaf and since Raiden is all over the bushes the other cats have sprayed, I decided to be safe rather than sorry! I've lost a cat to FeLV and it's not pleasant to go through.
