There are happy endings to bringing in another bengal -- and there are some not-so-happy endings. It's going to depend on the personalities of the cats. It's always easier to bring two siblings in together. Your bengal has claimed your home as his territory. Bringing in another cat will infringe on that territory, so your current bengal may not be happy. Just because you are away from home during the day doesn't necessarily mean your bengal is bored. Mine stays home alone about 9 hours during the week and he does fine. He sleeps, he goes out into his cat enclosure -- he doesn't seem to mind. He has three cat trees he can jump up on and enjoy. He has several interactive toys he can enjoy if he's really bored. We also spend a lot of time with him when we're home and he gets to go outside on daily walks.

You're hoping that if you bring in another bengal, things will be fine. Initially, you can't expect that. I know if I brought another cat in our home for Raiden, he would try to kill it. That's just how he is. He's extremely territorial. If you decide you must get another bengal, then there is the safe introduction process which takes some time, but there is no guarantee that the two cats will ever get along. Then again, your current bengal may fall in love with a new kitten. You're tossing a coin up in the air -- there are no guarantees. Even though you want the best scenario, you have to consider it may not happen.

I'm not trying to discourage you from getting a second bengal. I'm just saying that there will be a long process you'll have to go through in order to introduce them properly in the hopes that they will become best buddies. Just know that bengals, especially, need their own space. So there will be another litter box, another cat tree, more toys.

It's definitely a risk. At 2yrs old, you still have a young cat and the odds are good that if you do the introductions the right way, and keep your expectations realistic (expecting that your resident cat will be upset at first and probably some hostility towards both the kitten and you, yourself), then you are likely to get a good result. There have been discussions here in the past were people have said that perhaps getting your bengal a friend comes somewhat at the expense of a little bit the bond that you have with him, so that is something to ponder a bit. Also you just have to take your own cat's personality into consideration here. Is he the sort of cat that has a very strong, negative reaction when he sees another cat outside your home or something like that? That sort of thing can give you some insight into how difficult or easy it might be.

All things being equal, If it were me, I would probably do it, is my $0.02, especially if you have a reasonable-sized home. I have 2 bengals, but they are biological sisters and I brought them home at the same time, so it's not quite the same thing, but I've heard enough other stories here of people doing that I think the positives overweight the negatives and the risks overall. If you do it though, I'd strongly recommend going with a bengal kitten. An adult-to-adult introduction is a lot tougher and more problematic. If you are not familiar with cat introduction techniques, it's covered in pretty much any cat behavior book, on websites, and frequently talked about in cat magazine articles, or just ask here. Also with a second cat, there comes a greater premium of "catifying" your home, so that's something that you can pre-emptively to help insure long-term success. Adding vertical space like additional cat trees and shelving will cut down on potential hostilities between cats and help them get along better long-term.

We have two female bengals...introduced the second when our first was 8 months old and they are best friends. My past experience is that its easiest to introduce a new kitten to a cat who is less than 4, though as others have said it depends on the cats. Our moggie (male) was 7 when we introduced the bengals, and he took to them quickly and even enjoys playing with them. I would go for it. Your cat is young enough that there is a very good chance of it working out very well, and it sure is fun to watch them enjoy each others company. There will probably be plenty of initial hissing and growling, but they are likely to work that out.
