Hi people.

I’ve got a quick query regarding cats with car travel.
I am currently under an unfortunate position where I am due to lose my job. I have however been offered a job in Aberdeen. (2 hours drive from where I currently stay).

I obviously have to take young Oscar (2 year old Bengal) into account, but I feel I don’t have any choice but to accept this opportunity. (Mortgage and bills to pay after all!)

A couple of options have passed my mind, I was wondering if anyone could comment/advise on each? Has anyone been a similar situation before?

- Move to Aberdeen with Oscar and come home every second/third weekend with Oscar having to spend these periods in a cattery in Aberdeen. Is it fair to put him into a cattery every second week?
- Move to Aberdeen and come home every weekend with Oscar coming with me all the way. Is a 2 hour drive too much for a cat twice a week? The most he does just now is 30 minutes (once a week to visit my parents!)
- Move to Aberdeen and to leave Oscar at my parents and only see him during the weekend. (This is my least preferred option).

Before anyone mentions, of course staying in Aberdeen permanently is the obvious best fit for Oscar; however I have commitments at home such as girlfriend/sports team/family/friends so would hope one of the options above is suitable.

This move would hopefully only be a 6month period as I will be actively looking for work closer to home but obviously there are no guarantees.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Hi

I have no experience of moving with cats but I would guess that as long as he is comfortable with travelling then the journey every weekend for 6 months or so will be ok. Hopefully someone else on this forum will come along who has experience of this.

I think it would depend on how comfortable he is in the car. If he was fine with being in the car for a few hours then I would just take him with me. I take Rebel everywhere I go, but he is perfectly content in a vehicle.

Sorry, but I think your least preferred option might be the best one for Oscar, especially as it may only be for six months.

Do your parents like Oscar? Does he like them?

If this were my dilemma, I would certainly take my cat back and forth with me. 2 hours travel in a car is not too much...for my cat that is. He is used to lengthy car trips and is not stressed by the car.
Good luck!

Thank you for all the replies. It is much appreciated.

Oscar is fine travelling for 30 minutes. (I’ve never had him in the car any longer so couldn’t tell you if he would be stressed out or not for a longer haul.) For the 30 minutes he normally just sleeps though so I can’t imagine 2 hours being too big an issue. I take him everywhere with me so is usually in a car around 3 days a week anyway.
I suppose I could limit my journeys home to once every fortnight meaning he only has to endure the travel twice in a fortnight. If he was to endure a 2 hour car journey what would I do about food/water/cat litter during this time?

He is OK at my mums house but she has an older/grumpier cat who doesn’t enjoy Oscars playfulness. (To be honest, she only has one love in life… food). She can tolerate Oscar for an afternoon but I feel a more permanent move would be problematic.

It’s a massive move for me as well obviously and all of the factors are making it feel risky. Stress!!

I wouldn't have thought that food/water/litter tray would be an issue for just two hours. Especially if you can time it so Oscar has just used the litter tray then you get in the car for example.

I'm sure he will be fine. You will be more worried than him!!

My two hate the car but with the back and forth to the vets we did when I first had them both, they obviously think VETS as soon as they get in the carrier!! Poor sods

If it were me, I'd definitely not use a cattery. I never do that anyway, when I go away from home, I use a catsitter, and so my cats can stay in the comfort of a familiar and less stressful environment, where they are not subject to fleas and parasites and illnesses etc.

Whether you take Oscar back with you when you are visiting your family and friends, to me, would be dependent on the accommodations on that end. If you are pretty much always going to be out and about, visiting people and doing your own thing, and he has to endure a stressful situation at you mom's, then I think leaving him with a catsitter back in Aberdeen would be the best thing. Look at it this way: either way he's not with you, may as well be in a friendly environment when he's not. If however it's a pretty good setup, where he gets along with your parents, and they like him and interact with him, and peace can be made with the other cat, then that might be the most attractive option. I would pretty much base the entire decision on your estimation of how pleasant or unpleasant an experience he would have at your mom's.

To me, the car ride is not really much of an issue. Even if he is initially stressed out by it, I think with repetition that will be overcome, and it would be just a couple chilled out hours with you. Give him treats and such and make sure it's as good an experience as it can be. You can bring food and water for him. Give him a nice big carrier. The litterbox can usually wait.
