I guess its a behavioral thing, but I've never seen another cat do this.
He will do it to basically anything that's fabric.... He does it just about daily and more than once a day usually, and sometimes up to 30 minutes until he gets distracted or tired.
He does it to my curtains, my clothes, my towels, blankets. When I see it I stop him, because I worried he may get fabric in his mouth and swallow. When I do stop him sometimes he'll just walk away and find something else to do it to, and I'll have to follow him I'll have to stop him from doing it to the new thing he's doing it to. LOL

And he does knead, so it's not him kneading. It's something different. A strange habit.

Does anyone else experience this? Or have seen it? Know what it is?

Haha I am so sorry I don't mean to laugh but I never thought my dog would have anything in common with a cat lol!! Max, our dog does the same thing!!! It's really strange!! He especially loves towels that have little balls of fuzzies on them, my kids summer pool towels are really bad about getting fuzz balls. Anyway he will sit there and pick every last one off! I think he honestly likes the texture  because he doesn't eat it or even chew on it really he just nips at it! He also has an obsession with toe nails  and not only his but everyone else's! I have never had to trim his nails and we have had him for three years! To make matters worse I have to sleep with my feet out of the blankets(to keep BB from attacking me at night) an I can polish my toes and wake up the next morning and he has chewed most of it off  I don't even know he is doing it  our pets and their neurotic behavior lol

It looks like Basil's just putting it in his mouth and lets it go. Some people have weird things they do too so I guess cats can as well. Mine does the kneading, but nothing with the mouth like that -- at least I've never seen him do it.

Ahahaha what IS that! I wonder if it's some kind of soothing nature. I can't imagine a dog doing that. That's so funny. Basil also clips his own toe nails. Ahahah not that it makes them any less sharp......

WELL! I'm glad we're not alone with this! I think basil tries to do it to other things hit fabric is the only thing he can really grab to do this to. Lol have you wondered like I have about it? Perhaps it's some kind of calming remedy? Although I think kneading (making biscuits) is the norm calming remedy. Which he does.

Hahaha basically he pulls the fabric with his nails then bites open the fabric between his nails so it breaks. Then does it over and over again all over the fabric. His favorite thing to do this on is towels. Hahaha yeah I've never seen any other cat do it either. Like you said, we all weird habits including our kitties

Most definitely. Usually when he gets nippy on stuff I take it as him telling me he wants to play and I'm being to boring for him

It is seen a lot in Siamese, wool sucking, some on dressing gowns and other things, just be careful he doesn't swallow anything!

Hi slbencke

I have just watched your video, my bengal girl Suki does exactly the same thing but 'only' to my expensive lounge curtains! She will jump to the top of her cat tree of an evening and start plucking at the closed curtains with her claw then bite her nails to free the threads. I've often wondered if she does this because she wants the curtains opened? She only has to ask!

Ramses does something similar to that, just with boxes. He rips the sides of them off, one bite, by one bite. I let him do it. It doesn't bother me any. I will leave boxes on the floor and watch in amusement while he makes himself a new cat bed.

:) Ahh, is that what it's called? Yes that is what I worry about, is swallowing fabric, so I try to eliminate things around the house he can do it too.
