Hi
Just wondering what height cat trees folks have?
I have a ledge in my cat's room, a ceiling high cat tree would get in the way so I was going to buy a small one and put it on the ledge... But next year I'm planning on changing the room so it'd have to go on the floor.
Also I've read mixed advice on where a kitten should sleep which is better his main 'room' or his 'person's room' (mine)

Raiden's main cat tree is 74" high. He has another one that is just about 60" and one that is 37". He prefers the tallest one. Raiden is 6 years old and he sleeps where he wants to sleep, which is between me and my husband. He tends to want to be in the same room with us and last night even graced my husband with a short nap on his lap, which Raiden NEVER does. Temps have dropped here in Tennessee and I think Raiden feels the chill.

For the first week in their "safe room" my cats only had access to about a 3' high "tree". Not because I thought that was all they could handle, but simply because I couldn't fit a bigger one in that particular room. As soon as they graduated out of that room though, they immediately had access to one that go up about 7', and of course they immediately went right to the top They also have access to a "cat run" up high on the wall, that is probably 8' or 9' up. I think that's about as high as I want them to go for two reasons:

1. At some point it becomes problematic to get them down from there if I need to for some reason.
2. Serafina has decided that it's fun to leap off it now, landing on the bed like a trampoline (sometimes on to of me if I'm on the bed!). And I probably would worry if it were a couple feet higher.

As far as where the kitten should sleep, when the kitten is brand new, and scared, and homesick, and acclimating to the new members of the household, it is often useful to confine him to a smallish room where he can feel "safe". Then open up the rest of the house over time. But that's usually only for the first week or so. After that, one consideration is the little guy getting squished if you are the type that rolls over alot in your (or your partner's) sleep. So again that consideration mostly goes away after say the first few months or so. After that point, it's really just a personal choice. Your cat will adapt to either, it's just a matter of what you want.

We tried to keep Maxwell confined to a smaller room... which ended up being our bedroom for the most part. Faust was displeased because he liked out bedroom as well. He was so little and our bed so big, the little piggie would cry at the side of the bed, I'd roll over and he'd put his fat belly in the palm of my hand and I'd lift him up on the bed. He'd sleep with us for a little while, then want down (same process) and go sleep on our clothing in the laundry basket. He was raised in the breeder's enormous bedroom/bathroom after his mother died, so I think he was used to night time routines and things. He'd been in a carrier or closed in the bathroom/closet area quite a bit as their safe room, so we didn't worry much. Now that it's getting colder here, I had two Velcro cats in the bed with me last night. Typically, they'll start out in the bed or I'll wake up to find Max at the head of the bed next to me, but they don't stay once we're awake or totally asleep, depending on where they started. At home, we have to boot them out of the bedroom now, because Max will try to get us to wake up and play from 2am to 5 am. Here, not so much because my husband is not here.

I'm going to bring out our cat tree when I go home for Thanksgiving. I don't have one here and they're going nuts.... but they have plenty of space on the bar, fireplace mantel and huge bathroom counter, and five scratchers. Our cat tree is about 5' tall on the two towers with a platform at 4' and another at 24" off the ground. It's got a huge base, as well. When Max was tiny, it was hard to keep him off anything tall, so we just gave in and got a cat tree that was taller than the counters, so at least it was covered (unlike the counters and tile floor) and he wouldn't hurt himself. They're 16.5 and 14 pounds now at 2.5 and 4.5 years old and full of themselves.
