Hello

We have spotted 1 or 2 large foxes around our property and neighbourhood. I am really paranoid now.
We have a cat proof garden and my cats are playing there during evening up to 2200 2230. We do keep an eye on them though.
I also ( my stupidity!!) leave food for them outside when they are out. no food left overnight of course.
I am now really scared that my cats can become prey for large fox/foxes.

I started to look into fox deterrent etc .
Can anyone recommend /advice something

Personally I wouldn't be worried as the risk to cats from foxes is very low. If you had chickens or rabbits, then you'd definitely need a fox deterrent.
There are many foxes where I live, and many outdoor cats. I've even seen a cat and a fox in the same garden.
I reckon foxes tend to ignore cats as they see them as another predator, and not as prey.

I suggest no more food outside .. it can attract allsorts of wildlife.
And for a while stay nearby your garden during your piddie's enclosure time... walk around and keep your scent in the air.
Foxes will avoid humans utmost.. and can smell you of course.
If you are concerned foxes will learn your cats are vulnerable you can make sure you yourself are heard, seen and smelt outside and around your enclosure. The foxes will not be willing to mess with a human, there are easier meals unguarded elsewhere.

When I was growin up we had rabbits and a fox kept getting into their hutch at least a couple of times a week! It was horrible because they were my pets and I lost several! My parents tried everything to keep them out by nothing worked!!! My mom and I were getting our hair done and it came up at the salon. The cosmetologist that was cutting my moms hair went to her trash and grabbed a bag of hair and told her to sprinkle it around the hutch! We of course went straight home and did it! We never had problems with them again!!! We also did the same thing around our vegetable garden to keep wild life out! Sounds crazy but it worked!!!! Just for peace of mind, my husbands cat would chase away a fox that stayed around his house!!! You can also get on YouTube and watch cat vs fox videos , I think you might be a little surprised!!!

It's better to be proactive and do what you can to avoid any confrontation between a fox and your kitties. Anything is fair game when the fox is hungry. I have learned something about the human scent .. we don't have foxes, but we do have coyotes in the woods behind our house. Neighbors have seen them.

the reason I am soo paranoid is that about 2 months ago i travelled with this lady who had her cat in carrier going to the vet - we talked a bit about cats, and she told me her cat was badly attacked by urban fox in london. Cat almost lost her leg , it was so badly punctured that they have been going to vets for the past 8 weeks for treatments. I was horrified !

Thanks, I see if I can find some human hair around here to sprinkle . How odd it would be here if I go to hairdressers asking for human hair !! lol

I talked to some neighbours and somebody suggested that foxes would stay away from barking large dogs. is this true? Apparently somebody seen 2 foxes running away once their dog started to bark.
So if this is the case, then we have a next door neighbour with 5 or 6 dogs all various sizes. all barking at different times as well. hope it will help to keep them away !
