Such good news, the vet has confirmed basils crystals in his urine have disappeared. But is still peeing on one couch. The vet thinks some of his urination may be behavioral. And suggested feliway product. Well, went to a couple pet shops and only found Comfort Zone product, which has Feliway in it. but it is not working well.
I returned it and planned to order Feliway, thinking it may work better. Does anyone know the difference between the two products? I have done a google search, but no clear answer. would love some suggestions/opinions on this. :)

I went through this when we adopted Jasper! The comfort zone does have Feliway in it and I am almost positive they are very much alike! I compared the ingredients when I had the both of them and it was almost identical! I honestly think I had just as much success with the comfort zone as I did with Feliway! I actually have three in the cabinet for emergency use! How long did you have it plugged in and how many? I noticed a huge difference in Jasper when I went from one to two in his safe room(which is a large room) I also had four plugged in through out the house when he was allowed in the main part!

Hmmmm interesting. Well I've had it for about a month, but rather than a plug in, we used the spray. The vet actually recommend the spray because it is concentrated for a particular area (the couch). If they are very similar I wonder if feliway would be anymore effective....

I have only used Feliway but have used both the plug-in and the spray. The plug-in I found much more effective as it creates a soothing atmosphere

I would use a plug-in for the room the couch is in and also perhaps use the spray on the couch and other things near.

I also used the spray and I didn't have any luck with it at all! Jasper was going on the couch in his safe room and I tried the spray on the couch and he still went! I plugged in another Feliway and he didn't do it again! When we let him explore the house I made sure to have the plugs in a couple of days in advance! The one room he was allowed in that didn't have a diffuser of some sort, he peed in! They really work you just have to find what works for Basil! He might need a plug and a spray! Try to get the plug as close to the couch as you can! They are expensive but IMO worth it when you are dealing with issues like that!

I would definitely recommend the plug-in rather than the spray. The plug-in creates a continual soothing atmosphere all around the room, 24/7 (until it runs out), but I don't know how long the spray lasts or how effective it really is. I think the spray is probably more useful for using in the carrier before a vet trip and short things like that.

You can check ebay.com for better deals if you want to save some money. I've gotten it from there for significantly cheaper than they charge in the pet supply stores.

Reading up on the uses of Feliway regarding inappropriate urination I now understand the benefits of both systems a bit more.

The diffuser is designed to create an overall feeling of comfort like others have said. It is supposed to make them feel more at home. Depending on the size of the house, multiple diffusers are required. We have 2, one upstairs and one downstairs.

The spray is more to use in places where direct scent marking has taken place. So, if your cat sprays. The recommendation is to use a backlight to identify all the areas of marking. Next is to clean them thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner. Then spray with Feliway EVERY day for a month. This is to try and break the cycle of them needing to spray... That's all the theory anyhow.

The spray can also be used to spray on stuff like cat carriers to help alleviate stress.


Make sure you are cleaning the areas he goes to the toilet properly. It needs to be an enzymatic cleaner, like Urine Off. Bleach smells like cat wee to cats so they will continue to associate the area with their toilet. Same with other ammonia based cleaners. Use of something like a waterproof backed picnic blanket is very useful for sofa wee'ers....
