Just a few tips please around one of our favourite subjects - toileting!! :-)

Simba recently had a water infection (now treated and no more problems) and urinated on the carpet a few times. I have a product called 'pet wee away' which is an enzyme cleaner and i bought it when he had a water infection as a kitten. At first i thought it was really good stuff but now i am noticing that the areas i clean with it smell badly again after cleaned. Could anyone suggest any others that REALLY work? I have heard of natures miracle and urine off and have also heard the best thing is a 1:1 white vinegar water mix? But just wondered what you guys have tried and tested and found successful? I am really getting paranoid now that my house just stinks of cat pee and i have been trying to avoid people visiting which is really daft. I am also getting a black light to make sure i am not missing any sources of smell which brings me to my next question.......

The litter trays! We have had these almost two years now and even when cleaned with cleaner and filled with fresh litter they still smell of cat pee so i wanted to swap them out as i think the smell is now imbedded!! I am just concerned as to how this will affect the cats? I know cats generally don't like too much change around their litter boxes so should i just swap one at a time? They will stay in the same location and will have the same litter in.

I would change one box at a time. That way if your cats don't like the change they can use their old one until they get accustomed to the change. With the urine cleaner I have both urine off and the natures miracle and I will swear by the natures miracle!!!! We just adopted a stud cat and I was terrified he would spray, but he only had one accident on the sofa in his safe room! He thoroughly soaked it I tried the urine off but it still left the odor behind, I went and purchased the natures miracle and it worked wonders! You could also try washing your boxes with it to see if that will rid the smell!

I have used simple solution from pets at home and it seems to have done the job.

You must make sure you have blotted up as much of the wee first and then soak twice as much area as the wee was and leaving for at least 10 mins before blotting the simple solution up to give it time to work.Just giving a quick spray doesn't work (as I have found out!)

You may laugh but...... When I wash Merlin's litter tray out after a deep clean, I use strawberry scented Fairy Liquid!
He doesn't mind the fresh, fruity smell, and it seems to help cover over a bit of the stink when he has a poop, immediately after the tray is reloaded with fresh wood pellets. It definitely gets rid of the pee and poop smells

Spray the area of carpet with an ammonia & water mixture and let set for a few minutes. Put a white towel over the area and iron it - keep the iron moving. It works for stains - it will transfer the stain onto the towel - and I have found it works with smells too. Don't breathe in the vapors (don't lean over the iron and then iron) and I like to open the windows too. Once the ammonia smell dissipates, it should smell any more. If it does, repeat and let it soak in more/for longer.

I would have thought that applying Ammonia would make the patch smell of wee to cats. Cats have a much stronger sense of smell than we do.

The only way to remove the smell is by use of an enzymatic cleaner. This breaks down the proteins in the wee/smell thus removing any scent. You do need to completely saturate the stain and let it dry completely.

I also have read that you should not use ammonia to clean cat urine as it does, as lollo pointed out, smell like urine to cats.

I bought simply solution to try.... First application didn't work but i don't think i saturated it enough as i did it again and it worked - yey :-) i also bought a blacklight torch. Which is really useful.
