We wondered how long it takes a Bengal kitten to know his name?

We have had Tarkan for 7 weeks now, he is 15 weeks old this weekend. Tarkan has settled into his new home very well, is very happy, eating well, using litter trays properly, no problems with his hearing as he hides from the vacuum in his igloo etc,. We call him a lot but he just doesnt seem to know his name yet. Is this normal? I am sure our other boy Isis knew his name in less time than 7 weeks, maybe we are worrying for no reason.

I think BB knew her name fairly quick also. It all depends on the cat tho and more so the tome you use rather than his name! I can call BB anything and she will come running as long as I use the right tone with her!

It's entirely dependent on both the teacher and the student. It's probably much more dependent on the number of times you use his name in a context than how many calender days pass by. But don't forget that cats are pretty analytical, just because they know their name, doesn't necessarily mean they will choose to come when they are called. That is an entirely different set of training.

If you simply want to establish whether your cat knows his name, speak out a few sentences where one word of it is his name. Does he look up or jerk his head around at the appropriate moment?

If you want him to learn his name, say his name often in context. If you want him to come when called, give him the expectation that there is a strong possibility that a treat will be given if he does come (clicker training also helps).

It might be off a little here, but we just adopted a 2 year old ex stud a little over a week ago. His name was Ullr and we(my kids) decided it should be Jasper. After about a week he started to respond to his name, even tho he is 2 years old! I can call out to him from another room and he will always answer Its cute, my other Bengal, BB could not care less if I talk to her!
