I know I would be very upset if I accidentally hit a dog or cat. I get upset when I see one lying in the middle or on the side of the road -- especially when it's a stray that I'd been feeding for several weeks, trying to befriend it and give it a home. I hope the OP found the owner -- so at least there is closure for someone who loved this cat.
