Hi, about an hour ago i started my van engine to go to work and with it being raining there was a beautiful tabby tom on my engine, i didnt notice till i pulled out and saw in my wing mirror the cat was spasming in the road, it died after about 30 seconds.

I've wrapped it in a blanket and put it inside my van. It has no name or address on the collar.

I've spoken to the local council and they directed me to a local vets and the rspca but they said they cant do anything and didn't give me any help (really annoying)

WHAT DO I DO?

I think the most you can do is take it to a place where they can scan it to see if it has a microchip.

I was just thinking that in a recent thread discussing outdoor cats nobody mentioned that something like this could happen. Depending on how involved you want to get you could put up fliers/post it in a paper or specifically ask to have it checked for a chip. You could barry it in the ground or freeze it till you find the owners. I think most people would toss it in the woods or garbage and pretend it never happened, not most people here. Sorry you had to go through that

I'm going to take him out to my country house and bury the poor mite, then i'l put some found ad's around the area and in the local newspaper saying that I've found a lost cat..

Really upset me watching him die.. blood everywhere made me feel physically sick but couldn't just leave the poor guy there knowing that hes part of somebody's family..

I see this was awhile ago, but my heart goes out to you! How awful! I guess an upside of living in the city is that we can at least get to someone to read a chip, register with the SPCA and so on. I'm so sorry for your experience. I hope you were able to locate the cat's family through an ad. I have to share that my ex once had a similar experience. It was late at night and he was racing back to me with a stupid pastry I had a pregnancy craving for. The street was not lit and he ran over and killed a cat named "Toby." He had a collar. My ex called the number on the tag straight away. Turns out Toby had been missing for YEARS! Long story, but now Toby was but two blocks from their new home. That broke my exes heart! But the man came and met him, picked up Toby (begging my ex not to blame himself), and took Toby to be cremated. To this day (we are still good friends), when we drive by or on that street we both say "TOBY!" We both call it "Toby's Street." You did the best you could! It could be a similar situation. I hope you'll check in if you do find this kitties people:)

your poor guy - i hit a cat and it died in my arms too.
My vets were really good - they told me to bring it straight in and they scanned him and luckily he was microchipped and they were able to contact the local owners.
I felt awful, left my details for the owners to contact me if they wanted. If your vets wont help then do the best you can.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. I would definitely suggest phoning your local vet and asking if they would mind scanning for a microchip for you. If not, like you suggested, put up adverts and fliers to say that you have their cat. If nobody comes forward, I would bury him and if somebody comes forward after that, you could tell them where he's been buried.

If you're in the UK, the reason why the vets and local council is so unhelpful is because (harsh as it sounds) it's not a legal matter they're concerned with. Shocking as it sounds, it's what my colleague told me and another member on the forum has confirmed this is true, hence our concern about our own bengals' safety when being allowed out alone where cars frequent. When a dog is run over, whether on private property or on a busy road, this needs to be reported.

If a cat gets run over, this doesn't need to be reported by the driver and even if it was, this doesn't get taken up by the police. My guess is that they see cats as 'solitary, independent free-roaming animals' and therefore they can't control where they go and if they get hit, it's not their responsibility

When Cousteau got knocked down and killed, the person who's house he was killed ouside of posted small handwritten note through the neigbourhood letter boxes with their phone number on.

I called and for one heartstopping moment I thought he'd only been injured, sadly he was dead

I brought him home and buried him in a sunny spot on the garden

Still makes me when I think about it but I'd rather have done that one last thing for him than just have him tossed in a rubbish bin

When we had to put our cat Tilly to sleep we had her cremated after and we put her ashes in a large plant pot and brought some special flowers for her. Ironically... we planted lillies as the markings on them where very similar to the markings around her eyes. These lillies every year for the past 3 years have grown 5 foot high and have the most amazing flowers - unlike the other lillies planted next to them in another pot that are shorter and bloom for less time.
We know them as Tilly's lillies and we take photos of them every year. I sit by them and chat to her when I have good news or feel sad.
