Was this taken at night? It looks as if it's a shadowy area anyway. Try again during the day by a window... if you have a option on your camera to open the aperture try that too...

No, it was during the day in my apt with the lights on...
Hard to ever get a pic of them sitting still!!
I love Yukis face in this picture though- he really IS that sweet and innocent!!

As mentioned, don't use the flash and adjust the ISO if possible. The ISO denotes how sensitive the image sensor is to the amount of light present. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image sensor and therefore the possibility to take pictures in low-light situations.

The focusing isn't right ;).

Maybe you were too close, and seeing the pupils, there was less light than in the first photo...
