Please can someone give me some advice? Last night we were moving things around in the spare bedroom and we moved a bin bag (with some things wrapped in bubble wrap inside) that our 4 month old boy kitten seems particularly attached to. Next to it was a tiny patch of clear liquid but it did not smell of urine. There is no delicate way of putting this, it smelled of semen. Do you think it was an accident? We have another kitten the same age but a little girl. They are not due to be neutered for another 2 months. Should I be worried? Please help.

*rofl*

When I was a teenager, we had a cat (neutered male!) who would sit down in front of the TV and start licking his private parts until he had what looked like an erection. He liked to do that when we were watching so it often ended with a call: "Mom! Max is jerking off in front of the TV!" and him being thrown out of the house for a little while. He'd give us this really stupid, priceless mid-lick look with his tongue still sticking out, legs up and private parts exposed. You'd think neutering would take care of such urges or maybe he was really just cleaning himself...

Here's a cat playing with himself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gB3Czv0vbw
I guess it's gross yet funny if it's not your cat. But our one cat kneaded then humped...it was just disgusting and utterly disgusting. He was fixed too. I think you should get yours fixed ASAP before he learns stuff.

uh yeah there is the chance it may not have been semen? Wouldn't it be on the bag and look different?

Thanks for the reply. It really did smell very strongly of you know what. Of course I have now been suspecting every drop of liquid I see on the floor! I haven't found anything before or since though. He loved popping the bubble wrap inside the bag so perhaps he just got overexcited whilst doing that?! I'm not sure if my vet will do neutering before the age of 6th months plus I'm wondering if it will stunt his devlopment somehow. It really made me feel sick! :? Haven't noticed any sexual behavior though but his testicles do seem very well developed for a cat his age....I guess I'll just continue to keep an eye out and if it happens again, contact the vet.

I would think if his testicles are well developed, there would be no reason not to do the neutering a little earlier. I've read conflicting recommendations of when to do it that reach anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months of age. Personally, I would take any age recommendations as guidelines that will have to be adjusted for individual cats. During normal male kitten development, the testicles will "drop" one after the other at some point (migrate from inside the body to fill the scrotum). As far as I know, neutering before that time point involves more complicated surgery and one testicle might not be found leading to a half-neutered cat and requiring follow-up surgery. But standard neutering can be done easily as soon as both testicles have "dropped" which might happen earlier or later depending on how fast the cat enters puberty. To the best of my knowledge, earlier neutering will not stunt his development.
