Cruel or not the system operates by negative association, something unpleasant if you don't do as I want you to do, rather than positive association, something nice when you do what I want you to do.

Some people see negative association as cruel, I am one of them, the level of cruelty does not matter to me, be it a slight electric shock to the neck or beaten with a stick - cruelty is cruelty.

I think the enclosure idea would be the best option here, although the invisible fencing isn't as cruel as some of you are implying. I'm friends with a local contractor who's installed countless setups (dogs & cats), I've seen it in action a number of times so I can give a genuine experienced opinion on it. It's a harmless static shock much like what you get from a car door...nothing more, it doesn't necessitate over dramatisation.

That said, I don't think it suits itself to this instance i.e containing a few pets in the family garden. I'd say it should be only considered to a more commercial enviroment as a back-up ring fence.

Enclosures are the best solution in domestic situations though, probably the pole based system is the best I've seen and also the most unintrusive. Any 'supplied & fitted' system will be expensive, unless you're competent with DIY to tackle it yourself.

It really depends on the layout of your yard as to what fits it best.
