Hey guys,

I'm looking to adopt a kitten and I found a gorgeous Bengal/siamese girl that is in a shelter, I'm in love! But the shelter is so far away from me, in upstate New York, and I'm in Miami - aand the shelter doesn't ship. Any advice/ideas? I don't want to make a car trip but I adore that kitten!

Does the shelter mean they don't ship the kittens at all, or do they mean they just don't organise anything themselves. Maybe you could organise to do all the shipping.

Or, do you know anyone in the area that could pick her up and then take her to the airport for you?

I hope you will calm down and think about this. What a long distance for a kitty to travel. I know they do travel across oceans, but it is so traumatic an stressful for the kitty. The poor thing has NO idea what is going on and nobody is going to take care of it on its journey, especially if there is a long layover. No food, no water? Cat may escape? I would not put a kitty through that. I guarantee you can find another cat much closer to home. Check out the bengal rescue network. While you may fall in love with a cat via a photograph, it does not mean that this is the kitty for you. I also doubt a shelter will allow someone who does not visit the cat in person to adopt the kitty. They usually need additional references. Most shelters don't just send a cat or dog on its way.

There are many Florida bengal breeders who may have adults for sale as well. I really hope you think this through and weigh the pros and cons of having this poor thing travel by itself for hours and hours.

Many rescues do not adopt out to other States or within so many 100 miles. I totally get your temptation though.

When i moved i had to bring my cats on an 8 hour drive with me and it was stressful for them and they know me... Crawled in my lap whenever we stopped to let them out... So a new person and a long trip would be a lot for a kitty.

I don't understand the dilemma. Yes, you're not going to be able to order a bengal kitten like you order a new watch on amazon. It's not going to show up 2 days later on your porch in a box by a guy in a brown suit, lol. But it's really simple... you call an airline, make arrangements to bring the kitten in the cabin with you (may require paying additional fees or ordering a second seat), you fly out there, get the kitten, and fly back. Done. People do this all the time.

I think she was wanting to fly the kitten to her without her flying up to get the kitten. Which is not the way to adopt any cat. Yes, flying up, adopting the kitty, then flying you and the kitty back to Miami is the best way to go. But, I'm sure it's much cheaper to fly just a kitty in the cold, dark cargo hold.

Here in Australia animals aren't allowed in the cabin period. They always have to go in the cargo hold. I was offered a really great job on the other side of Australia just recently (6.5 hrs flight away) and the 2 reasons I turned down a great career opportunity was because 1. I would be too far away from my sick Mum and 2. I refused to put my boys through being in the cargo hold for that long.
If I had the choice to fly with my boys in the cabin I might have considered it, but I couldn't bare the thought of them being in the cold and dark and alone for that long.
