I have two sweet cats. A Bengal and a Maine Coon (mix) that I love very much. Unfortunately, my fiance has allergies so our time together has to come to an end.

I'm curious about the right price for rehoming a Bengal.

The problem is that I can't give them away for free as people sell animals. I want him to go to a GOOD home not someone who is just going to sell him.

Any thoughts here?

I paid $850 for him. Curious what I should charge for the adoption.

Everyone is saying to NOT give animals away for free as people just sell them.

Thoughts?

I've been on this forum for about 7 years, and I've seen a lot of people re-home their bengals, but I've never seen anyone try to make money off of doing that. It's distasteful to even contemplate to me, to be honest. It's bad enough that you are betraying them by casting them out, the least you can do for them is to try to honestly find good homes for them, not just maximize your "investment".

Unless your cats are very young, I doubt there is much demand for them anyway. Most people want kittens when bringing home a new cat. Rehoming a cat is almost nothing like selling a used car. Do the right thing and see if you know anyone who would be an ideal home for your cats, and if you don't know of anyone, give them back to their breeders or to a shelter. They are better equipped to find them great homes than you are.

I adopted my two cats from a great rescue service called Second Chance Pet Rescue. I had to sign an agreement that if I was no longer capable of taking care of my two babies, that I would return them to the same rescue agency. They are microchipped and I would never do otherwise. They were a wonderful organization and really care for the animals they rescue. I still send their foster mom photos of them; she put so much into making them healthy kittens and adoptable 3 years ago.

Many owners charge a small rehoming fee of $50 to $100. If your bengal has pedigreed papers, then you should charge for it, along with a transfer paper from TICA. It's always sad when one has to re-home a cat due to allergies. There are medications one can take to control their allergies. Asking you to give up your cats is asking to chose between your partner and the cats. I am fully prepared to give up my husband of 46 years if he ever asked me to choose between my cats or him. I hate that you're having to go through this (and you will hate yourself if things don't work out with the fiancé).

There are bengal rescues that will take them and find them good homes. There are probably Maine Coon rescues as well. You don't know how to properly "vet" a prospective owner -- the rescues do.

Hi,

This forum strictly forbids the sale of any cat or kitten unless a nominal fee is asked that will go to a cat/animal charity. Any threads posted in the rehoming section asking for payment to recompense the owner will not be approved.

I suggest you take brianj12's advice otherwise, and contact a shelter/your breeder, or someone you know who can offer your cat/s a permanent and loving home.

Are you sure that your finance is allergic to the Bengal and not just to the Maine Coon?
Bengals are a less allergic breed and it's possible he's not actually allergic to it.

It definitely makes me sad in any situation like this.
In case of rehoming your cats; if you are worried they will turn around and sell them - make them sign a simple contract that states if they sell your cat or receive compensation from the sale of the cat then all the compensation is owed to you. Anyone who is looking to resell your bengal for a profit will think twice about anything like that.
