Hi Clare, I am sure you've already done this but have you tried the local Rescue Centres CPL's etc?

Thinking of you.

There was no sign of the cat someone is feeding. I'm hoping she contacts me when it is there and I've suggested she contacts Cats Protection as well, as if it isn't Hendrix someone else is also missing their cat and needs to be reunited.

Hi Debbie, yes I called the RSCPA and Cats Protection. I also upgraded him on PetLog for their premium service so when I registered him missing, they send out an alert to all animal welfare places/vets etc in a 30 mile radius. According to my vet though, that information is very basic so I posted out leaflets to as many vets as I could and took posters to the pet shops as well.

The lady has called me and has the cat in her kitchen. Apparently been there about a week. Runs off if anyone else comes to their door (which does sound like Hendrix) and he has green eyes and is white under the chin... I'm going straight from work. I will pick the cat up regardless of whether it is him or not, it can at least sleep in one of our many cat beds in the garage and be indoors and I will contact Cats Protection to collect him tomorrow.

Oh please, please God let it be Hendrix....

Clare, I hope and pray this kitty is Hendrix -- to put an end to this saga and reunite everyone. Cats can travel some distance as well. Here, people put the posters up on the power poles, but the power company and other utilities working on the pole will remove them due to the danger if they try climbing the pole around the poster. I don't think they fine people, they just take them down.

When my Bear went missing, I did a search of all the properties in a huge radius around my house and created a poster and mailed 1,300 out. I sent postcards to the 500 homes in my subdivision. I got countless phone calls, emails, etc. Never found him. The b/w cat I've been feeding has been gone since yesterday afternoon when his owner was here to see him and he ran away from her. I hope he returns at some point.

I know how heart wrenching this is and how difficult it is to concentrate on your job or anything else. The sooner you get Hendrix back, the sooner your lives can return to normal. Poor Jagger! Maybe this absence will be good for their relationship. Don't ever give up on finding Hendrix.

B***er.

At least you know that people out there are caring for cats that turn up on their doorstep.

Darn it! I'm sorry that wasn't him.

Hopefully the new flyers will help. Especially if you say he needs medical attention, that usually helps get people to second guess keeping a "found" pet that the owners are looking for.

Sorry to hear this :(

My friend rescues stray cats and posted this advice recently about lost cats:

HOW TO FIND YOUR LOST CAT

I wanted to share with you my sure fire way of FINDING YOUR LOST CAT. I say ‘sure fire’, because it has worked for me every time I have had one of my cats get out, or when I have helped a friend find their cat.

Most people are heart broken when they lose their pet. The good news is that most of the time, your cat is not lost at all, but hiding in a top secret hiding spot and waiting it out. Your cat has probably been spooked by something in the environment, OR your inside cat has gotten out, become overwhelmed, and found themselves a nice & dark hiding spot where they feel safe.

The mistake that 98% of people make when they lose their cat is that they wait to see if their cat will come back. Please do not delay, do not waste time, and DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR CAT. She is waiting for you to come and find her.

There are the usual things that you can do to find kitty, like call all the shelters, use social media, look around your yard, etc.
This is my advice:

- The moment your kitty is out, the MOMENT you realize, you must get out there and start looking for your cat. Look around the immediate surroundings. Look inside your house. Look in your yard, in your neighbour's yard. Your cat is very probably either in your yard somewhere, or your neighbour’s. It is unlikely that it will wander far in those first critical moments. Get a torch and look at night. Ask your neighbours to keep an eye out, show them the picture of your cat.
- Leave food out for your cat at the exit point. Do this every night, no matter where you think your kitty is.
- Print posters of your cat. Do this immediately. Find a clear picture of your cat, with a large font saying “LOST CAT” - something that someone that is walking past, or a passing car, can notice. State description of cat and last sighting, and your details. Now this is the most critical point – PRINT 100 COPIES OF THIS POSTER AND SATURATE YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH IT. Put it on every pole within a 200 meter radius of your house. The posters need to be up straight away, ie, the day that you lose your cat. Put them at the local supermarket, vets, bus stops, major intersections, schools, crossings, train stations…
- Get a humane cat trap. These can be bought for $30-$40 online, or you can hire one from Kennards. Watch some youtube clips on how to set it, practice setting it – then set it in your yard. Do this every night, and keep an eye on it. Apologise to any other cats you accidently trap.
- Do the usual stuff as well – calling shelters, vets. Call them every few days to see if they have picked up your cat. Don’t just call once. Keep calling them.
These things are essential for you to know:
- Your kitty might be able to hear you, but probably will not respond if it is scared. They are surprisingly silent when out in the unknown.
- Most cats break cover at the two week mark because of hunger and thirst, and will start to become more visible. This is when most sightings happen, and when you will start to get calls. You will not get calls if you have not put posters up in your neighbourhood.
- If you are not looking for your cat, and not leaving food out for it – it will start to wander further and further away from the exit point to look for a food source. This is why it is so important to start this process immediately.
- IF the reason for escape is a new pet, like a dog – you must contain that pet, or keep it under close supervision until your old cat is back.
- If you have moved house, or if your inside cat has escaped, it is probably still very close to the exit point. Do not be fooled by its silence and reluctance to respond to you.
- Do not give up on your cat. I have found cats 2 months after they have gone missing. It takes an average of 2-4 weeks to find them, and it all depends on your persistence. If you do nothing, the chances of you finding your cat are about 5%. They usually do not just walk back in the door themselves. Your cat is waiting for you to find it.
- People will tear down your posters. Cat haters, council workers, other posters, etc. Go for walks every few days, and replace your posters. Do this over and over. You will get news from someone, somewhere.
- Keep going, keep calling, keep putting those posters up… sometimes it takes months. Hopefully it will not, for you.

Good luck, I have my fingers crossed.

His collar has been found in Purbrook, 11 miles away. He must have been transported there somehow. I'm going to get the collar tonight and find out exactly where it was found so I can go back in daylight at the weekend and have a good look. I wish to god I didn't work, but we are so busy I have no chance of getting a day off.

My hopes are fading fast.

Thank you Fenstar for your advice. And thank you too, Debbie.

The Cats Protection branch he is registered on as lost also covers Waterlooville and Purbrook, so that is something I guess. I have a list of vets I will send flyers to. I used to live in the vicinity so have a rough idea of the area although its ages since I've been back there.

It has occurred to me that the neighbours who had the work done went to Waterlooville for New Year, so may have someone over there that also visited last Monday. Just to give me another dot on the map. He is having more work done today and never thought to tell me, with vans and banging going on. Jagger is indoors though, a very unhappy and lonely boy right now and I'm going to be late home as I'm trying to find his brother. I feel so bad for him.

At least Jon is home Sunday so he will have company or someone around more at least - I know Jon will be out trying to locate our boy as well. Hendrix always comes to his whistle and a whistle will carry further too.

Trying hard to remain positive...

Clare, it's highly unlikely Hendrix traveled 11 miles on his own. That's a very long way. He obviously hitched a ride somehow. At least you have a clue. Fenstar gave some good advice. The b/w kitty I was feeding still hasn't shown back up. He is an outdoor cat, knows the area here very well. I'm just worried he is injured in some way and have no idea where he might be. I knew I should have put a GPS thing on him! Back to Hendrix ... at least you know the area now and can concentrate more on that. I hate that you can't get off from your job to take care of this. The owner of the b/w cat works and is frantic that she can't be here to help me search for him. Personally, I think it's futile with all the woods behind our house, but I will go out looking for him.

What I don't understand is that Hendrix is not a happy traveller in vehicles. He literally yells at the top of his voice. Unless someone stole him, he's impossible to ignore.

I spoke to Havant Council but also need to speak to Winchester as the area the collar was found is close to the boundary. Not that Winchester is nearby but they cover Denmead and Southwick.

I was also given a list of other local animal welfare groups to try.

He might well howl his head off when travelling with you, but if he's been spooked then he might well have hunkered down and kept very quiet, leaping out when he got a chance.
