Anyone have experience with fixing wall scratches?

Hi guys :)

I am moving out of my apartment soon and need to fix the scratches my cats have left in the walls.

Does anyone know the best way of fixing them?

I have heard of using joint compound to fill the holes, then painting over. Some have even suggested using toothpaste.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I had attached photos to show you the scratches.

We use joint compound, if you don't go crazy when you put it on you can usually just paint right over it without sanding once it's dry. If you get too much on there you can just sand it down a little and then paint.

If your walls are completely smooth, a light application of joint compound -- then sanding a little and painting will do the trick. If your walls are textured -- then the texture needs to match! If you had a pet security deposit, you may just want to leave them as that's what that's for! I don't think toothpaste would work well for this. Bad kitty -- cats are supposed to use scratching posts. LOL

It sounds as if you may have to paint an entire wall. Matching paint colors is extremely difficult. Maybe your landlord has some leftover paint on hand. There is white and then there is eggshell and ivory and all sorts of off-white colors. If you think the walls look bad with the scratches, wait until you try to touch up a spot with a different color of white paint!

Let us know how the touch-up goes. There are paints that have odors and paints that don't. There is oil-based paint and latex-based paint. This will not be as easy as you might think! You really need to use the type of paint that is already on the wall so there will be no bubbling if it conflicts. That's why I'd talk with the landlord (if it were me) and see what he/she might want you to do about it. There's normal wear and tear in rented home and he may have to repaint the place anyway.
