Hey all,

I am seeking some opinions on this kitten. I must admit, I pretty well fell in love with her when the breeder sent me pictures of her 10 days ago. The breeder said she had been holding on to the kitten pending evaluation, but has decided to put her up for adoption. Her asking price is $2200 Canadian (£1175) ---which includes 1st/2nd vaccinations, early Spay(which I am not entirely in agreement with), X2 deworm with strongid, a 1 yr health guarantee and a Vet. Health certificate. She comes from HCM screened and PK Def normal parents who are from good Bengal purebred stock in a very well known USA cattery.

My question is: is it insane to buy a Pet Bengal at this price? She will be registered and come with all the itinerant paperwork.

I'm really just seeking opinions about her quality at this point.....to me she is so beautiful it seems a shame not to have her in a breeding program, but the breeder will not sell rights to customers in Canada (as she believes it will interfere with her amount of business) otherwise I would buy her instantly regardless of price!

What are your thoughts?

She is beautiful. Is she pet or show quality? I'm presuming that she must be show given the price? If so I guess that could be a reasonable price given everything that is included particularly all the screening tests and health guarantees etc. When you work it all out it 'may' be a reasonable price but not something I would be prepared to pay.

Have you 'shopped' around at all to compare prices?

I'm no expert on working out these things though so hopefully someone will come along with more of an idea as to costs and what is reasonable to pay. It does seem like they are offering an awful lot.

I was leaning more or less towards the opinions you've given me, folks. Thank you.

Whether or not she's being sold as a 'show' quality pet, she will still be spayed before she comes to me, so I would have to show her in the 'altered category' which is somewhat less significant than the unaltered categories---for obvious reasons: a cat that can't reproduce will never share her excellent genes with any progeny, so is it really critical to show her? I don't believe I would show an altered animal. This is strictly my opinion.

I have been shopping around Extensively for a Bengal in Canada---they generally start at $1500 CND and this price is for kittens with obvious non-conformity to breed standards. While I hesitate to say this, as I'm sure there are hundreds (if not thousands of reputable breeders around the globe) here in Canada, it seems as though many are using their catteries as cash-flow projects.

The kitten is spectacular! I'm not an expert on show quality bengals, but the price the breeder is asking is for a show quality bengal. Pet quality bengals can go for $600 up to $1,500. Above that, it's show quality. However, the most important aspect should be the cat's personality! Raiden's grandfather was a Supreme Grand Champion show cat before he was one year old. If you're looking for a kitten to breed, you can expect to pay upwards up to $5,000 for a cat.

Are you insane for wanting to pay over $2,000 for a kitten? If the money doesn't break the bank and you really love the kitten, get her. Based on all the testing and shots, most breeders should do that and it doesn't increase the price of the cat. You're paying for the look of the kitten. That being said, having an asset with that value, you'll want to be especially careful that she never gets out of your home. Bengals are fast and can get get out the door before you blink.

Breeders don't like competition as it will bring the price of the kittens way down. Almost all breeders insist the cat be spayed or neutered prior to leaving the cattery. Breeding cats is hard work, even if you just want one litter.

This particular breeder is pricing ALL her kittens at or above $2000. They can't all be show cats! No matter, I've decided against this purchase.

I wonder if the breeder is getting that much money for the kittens when other breeders will be charging much less. You can ask any price you want, but the value of the kitten is what the people agree to pay for one. There are a lot of breeders out there who price their kittens well. You'll find the perfect cat for you. You just have to do a ton of research and weigh the options. Good luck.

My kitten was being held back as a breeder so therefore he is breeder quality. My breeder didn't claim they all were show/breeder quality and she didn't ask much more for the ones that were. I didn't pay half of that for my boy and he is what I consider a quality bengal. If the kitten were for show/breeding those prices would be a steal but for a pet I think it's a little much.

I would pay for a kitten from the right breeder... My desire is health and proper breeding. Price comes after all that. Depends on a lot of factors involved to be honest.

Regarding showing neutered cats. There is a huge benefit in this. I show my neutered girl, she loves it. The neutered section is very important and a lot of very good cats get shown in the neuter section, it can be more competitive than the entire section!

I early neuter all my kittens prior to rehoming. For me that is important and I would be wary of a new owner who wasn't happy with that.
