I have established that my new bengal boy cannot eat dry food of any kind and might have a sensitive stomach/bowel. His breeder reared him on Royal Canin kitten dry and Whiskas canned food and I continued the dry for a few days and moved onto Science Plan kitten dry. But he has severe diarrhoea with both brands of dry-and it STINKS!!! I tried Eukanuba kitten as I feed it to my ferret with the same result. Even on the way back from the breeder he had severe diarrhoea episode! He has since shat all over the bedroom he is kept in 3 times (dirty pawprints everywhere). So now, I avoid dry like the plague and have been advised by the breeder to feed raw beef mince and boy has it worked! His stools are normal and don't smell at all. But that's all he's been having for almost 2 weeks but I feel he is not getting enough variety in his diet. What do you think? Anyway, I have been looking to supplement his mince with a high meat content cat food, like Almo Nature. I fed a 70g can just now and I anxiously await the results! Any body experienced similar problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance x

Personally, if you currently have him on raw beef mince, I'd keep going with raw and just ask for a more complete diet.

I would suggest you read through the nutrition forum, as I'm sure you will find plenty of good advice there. It sounds like you could be in a good place though, as his beef mince diet is working, you can gradually add one thing to it for a week or two and then something else, like chicken, heart, liver, fish etc. If done slowly, you'll notice any I'll effects and be able to identify the culprit.

I would take a sample of the stool and the cat to the vet. Yes, some types of food can cause this, but you're changing the food and this problem continues. Bad bacteria can get in the digestive tract and only antibiotics can clear it up. I am sure this problem is no picnic for your kitty. Your vet may also recommend a special diet for your kitty. It's well worth the money for the office visit and necessary tests to know what is going on with him. My bengal developed a problem and it still took nearly a week to clear it up. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I will have a butchers at the nutrition section. Sherry, I only changed the brand of dry he was used to to 2 other brands of dry and had the same issues. He is doing fine on the mince. I haven't tried the Whiskas wet at all since I suspect it could be an intolerance to the cereals. He has also had his panacur to rule out worms (not that he would have had them anyhow). I find it hard to believe its something that warrants a poo sample because he has perfect poos with the mince..

Runny poo and stinky poo are characteristic symptoms of a parasite unfortunately. I'm glad that you were able to offer him some relief by feeding him raw food, but you very likely didn't solve the underlying problem. Panacur would not eliminate TF.

One of my kittens had runny, stinky poo for a long while. I kept changing her diet thinking it was food related as that seemed to make a difference. In the end the vet gave her a course of antibiotics which finally eliminated the problem and no more runny, stinky poo! It has been several months of normal poo behavior since the antibiotics.

I would definitely get a poop sample done to test for parasitic infections such as TF and Giardia.

The special diet you have him on now may be masking the symptoms.

Okay, I will book an appointment at some point. Could it be possible that he is just intolerant to the grain in the dry food? I have been reading around the forums and have heard similar stories from other owners about their bengals having smelly loose stools with dry..

A raw diet firms poo.... Regardless of what was causing the runny offensive poo.

He needs to be checked by a vet and samples sent. Sounds like TF to me!

Most kittens are born with worms and need frequent worming to counteract the issue.

Does sound like TF to me as well and it could be a combination of TF and food intolerance which was the case with us.

Take him to get the poop samples done first. If it is TF make sure you get the correct treatment ronidazole, as it is the only treatment that works.

Once you get that cleared up you will have a better idea whether it is also diet related.

There are a multitude of grain-free dry cat food products out there. But everyone is recommending that stool sample and vet visit.
