Fed up with buying stuff....making my own cat stuff!

So I've been fed up with buying stuff for Kai and trying to find something that I am looking for, but not being able to find specifically "it".

Kai outgrew his litterbox, so I bought him a new one. I tried to tackle another problem and get a litterbox with a "lip" for the lid....in hopes that if he pees against the edge it won't go through the crack and trickle out onto the floor. Well, this new dome shaped box was great....but it had ONE tiny spot where it didn't have the "lip" part and that happens to be where Kai decided he would do his number 1's.

Finally, I went out and bought a tupperware container and did the tupperware cat box. Kai LOVES it. Its huge, he can really dig around, and he still has tons of privacy.

The other thing we wanted to do was make a cat post to resemble a stair. He's really loving the stairs, and they are really not loving him! So we build two cat posts like this (one for a one-stair area in our house, the other for the top of the main stairs in the house). He LOVES it...and it is saving our stairs! It is also fun to watch him go crazy on it :)

I have just bought 1 of these cat litter boxes to the tune of £30 because it is what my breeder uses therefore my kitten will be used to it. Wish i thought of just buying a storage box like you have, although the one i have bought has holes in the top to help with the tracking. Also i love the step you have made it is a fabulous idea and relatively cheap to make aswell.

So genius!!! It's great when you're talented! The "stair" idea is great. I have four steps up to a bonus room and Raiden will occasionally scratch on them. Kai is just beautiful! You do know that inventions come out of necessity! You may be able to patent and market something like this and get RICH! LOL. I will say I have NEVER seen a litter box with a hole on top! But maybe that can be a new trend. Great job on both!

He's so handsome. The stair was a great idea.

I've seen the litter boxes like you made and they're really expensive. We use tubs like you did but we don't use the lids. I'm thinking we may try a couple with lids and see if they use them, it would certainly help keep the dog from helping himself to a kitty box buffet :rolleyes:

I made a similar cat box for Quasar so that the dog wouldn't root around in it. It took him awhile to get used to it, and he used his other box more than this one for a bit, but he uses it regularly now.

This box replaced his huge, deep, open box. The bonus to this box is there is very little litter tracking. By the time he jumps up and out, any loose litter is left on the lid. I simply dump it back in the box when I am scooping.

Yeah it is the cheapest and most functional litter box I have ever come across!

I debated doing it because of the hole on the top. I REALLY wanted a modkat litterbox (i'll attach an image), but these things are literally $180 (I think American) plus taxes and shipping....yikes.

This one isn't as pretty....but it does the same thing. I was gonna try and do little holes to let the loose litter fall back down, but I find it stays on the top and when I take the lid off to clean the box everyday I just tip the lid back over the box so all the loose bits fall back in. From the jump to the lid, then down to the ground, it collects most of the litter. It's awesome!

Kai first jumped in the box without the lid, so I put it on while he was doing his business so that he could use it to get out. What I thought might be a problem (getting in and out) is actually no problem at all....and I kind of think he likes it.

Sherry, I WISH I could get rich making this stuff!!!!!! Wouldn't that be great?! :lol:
