Spraying?

Hi there.

As some of you know we are trying to get Dexter's bum problems sorted still so we haven't got round to getting him neutered yet. He is nearly 8 months old now.

He doesn't go out so there's no worries about him getting any lady cat pregnant by the way.

I guess that if he would have started to spray we would have rushed him round to the vet to get this done but he hasn't started to show any signs of this yet. We were told some months back by the vet that some male cats don't actually spray at all. I found this hard to believe at the time.

Does anyone have any unneutered males that don't spray or sprayed late?

I'm just interested really. We are thinking of getting it sorted at some point but are not really in a rush to do so until we have him healthy.

My male tabby didnt spray until 4 years old. Then he started sprating round the house so got him fixed straight away

Yes I will probably get it sorted sooner rather than later but just worried with him not being 100% well it might be detrimental to his health.

I know when he had his vaccinations he had a very bad reaction to them and since then I've been worried about him getting him neutered.

Will have a word with dh tonight though as see if we can get him booked in.

Sme cats are about 18 months before they show any signs of "adulthood", but others have sired kittens at 6 months too.
Some male cats don't spray, but they can leave large puddles of pee in key places. My first stud cat did that, before he learned how to spray properly.

Seems to me that Bengals are pretty sexualised cats and both entire males and females will spray and those that don't are pretty rare.
Also even if he doesn't spray, entire male cat urine in litter boxes stinks a lot.

My bengal was neutered at 12 weeks old (he's now almost 8 years old) and he sprays when we are on our daily walks. There are other neighborhood cats around. The only two times he ever sprayed in the house was when he saw his arch nemesis outside the bedroom window (and he has since moved away). There's no guarantee if or when a male cat will start and neutering may not help the situation either. Some people are surprised that females spray as well.

We've got a male moggie who was neutered before 3 months that sprays on occasion.

I caught him doing it around one of the litter boxes in our old house (I'm assuming a territorial issue) so now I've replaced the open litter boxes with plastic tubs that have higher sides. He still does it inside one of the covered boxes, I can see it when I take the lid off to clean the box so I wash the whole thing out :rolleyes:

I don't blame you for wanting to deal with one thing at a time - its a good plan.

As Elaine has said it can take time for them to mature or it can happen early. Just keep an eye on things, I know people who have working studs that still don't spray. Once the TF sorted, get the snip and then you can finally relax

I'm not sure being completely honest, the only thing would be that when they are neutered or any procedure really it will cause a possible stress reaction and shedding of something like TF which is an intermittently shedding problem. In your case as you already know the TF is there and other than affecting the poop it doesn't really have much bearing on the overall immunity of the cat as far as I'm aware.

You could neuter yes, but as the treatment is only a couple of weeks of pill giving I would probably want to do that and then neuter. End of the day he is 8 months already so what's a couple more weeks.

Having a tough time at the moment personally as well so it's really helpful to me. At the moment I feel like my whole life is upside down. Nothing seems to be going right :sad:
