Oh i totally feel that pain! That's what happened to our beloved Horus. He was left in the road...and i am still gutted that i, or anyone like yourself, wasn't there for him in his final moments. Makes me so sad...
Still, at least the poor kitty you saw today had his final moments in peace, with you. How kind. I too would have done the same, whatever animal it was. I'd never let an animal lie on the road like that.
We stopped once on our way to a christening to pick a very bloody cat out of the road that people just kept driving over, like an old carrier bag. We even knocked on a few doors to try and find the owner, but to no avail. They obviously came home from work to find their poor baby, dead, at the side of the road, as he had gone by the time we came home a few hours later.

A few years ago, a kestral came in our garden and caught a blackbird.
then dropped it - i took it to the vet wrapping in a towel- a gapping hole in its chest
the vet looked at me like I was stupid..
but I could not have left it to die in agony
They humanely put it to sleep

How terrible. What a great thing you did, by stopping and trying to comfort the little guy. It really amazes me what people will do sometimes.
