Why tatoo a cat ???

Well perhaps in the USA that's not the same but in France before the microchip was invented tatooing was THE way to identify a cat (or a dog) . So the first thing people do when finding a stray is looking in his ears to see if he is tatooed and in that case bring it to the SPA or vet who'll identify him.

People still aren't always aware of the microchip method so when finding an untatooed cat they might keep it, saying he doesn't belong to anyone... (especially if it's a beautiful cat !) So tatooing something in his ear would make them aware that yes he does belong to someone . And it's permanent and will not get lost as might a collar .

Of course tatooing is done under anaesthesia, while we'll neuter them !

Some people still prefer it as it can be "seen" directly, but it will stop in 2012 so... no point having a real tatoo number with a microchip (and paying double price) .

If it were an outdoor cat, then yes no question about it. However he's indoors with little chance of getting lost I don't bother, I live in a secured building and have a balcony. He is microchipped just in case.

I walk him with a collar and leash cause that's the building rules, though. He doesn't really need it since he can walk beside me without it. But it's a contained courtyard so there's no chance of getting lost really. If you're cat goes outside or has a chance of it you should collar him.
