"Glitter?"

Hiya - the 'glitter' is the beautiful golden sheen that appears on a Bengals coat, which appears to dance and sparkle in the light.

The snow bengals have what is more commonly known as 'pearldust' or 'crystal' glitter as it's not so much of a 'golden' glitter as the darker coloured bengals.

I believe that this 'glitter' is unique to the Bengal breed - it's to do with the tip of the hair shaft being hollow which causes light to literally 'bounce' off the coat.

Yes, you seem to be right...my bengal appears to have '2 different kinds of glitter.' There is the one 'gold like speckled look' and there is another like a 'sheen' that almost looks like a glossiness, if that is making any sense (this one can be seen in her pics on her paws and her chest: http://www.bengalcatforums.com/forums/v ... php?t=1047 ).

How cool is it that they have such a distinctive gene ...I does appear to be unique only to the bengal breed, eh?

The glitter supposedly came from a cat that Jean Mill shipped from India, Millwood Tory of Delhi.

On Jean Mills page:-

MILLWOOD TORY OF DELHI
"Delhi" was a domestic cat found running loose under the rhinoseros at the New Delhi zoo in 1984. He was better spotted (NO ribstripes!) and more glittery-rufous than I had ever seen in America. He was used mostly with F1 queens at first (after several frustrating years of vainly trying to breed them to F1 males), but also gave his robust blood to the inbred traditional Egyptian Mau breed to make what was subsequently called 'Indian Maus'. In E. Mau pedigrees, he is TOBY and is registered by CFA and TICA as a Mau.

He is the cat on the left.

weird thing after i posted i went downstairs and Harlot seems to have more noticeable adult hair in (my male Beast is a long hair Bengal so he may have just as much in just can't notice it) and there is a pearly streak down her back that was glowing when we were sitting on the couch in front of the window

Its been so long since I last read about him, he's played such a huge part in the bengal that we all know and love today.....an Iconic boy.

Look at his big fat jowels, I'm sure he had no problems at all getting those F1's mated.....potent from 10 yards away! :lol:

The history behind the bengal is so interesting and I hope it never fades away, I guess many new owners fall for the looks of a bengal and only realise the history behind the breed after they get there kitten home.
