I was extremely lucky in that I found a breeder who let me choose my own cats names.

It can all depend on the breeder and when you agree to purchase the cat, if done after the rbeeder registers the cats then sometimes you are stuck with that name, but as said you can call them waht you want at home

The breeder that you mentioned sounds a bit odd. I wouldn't buy from her simply because she doesn't deserve custom if she's going to be rude.

I do name my kittens, but only because I would like to be able to submit the registration as soon as I can to ensure the paperwork is back in time. I would have no problem with their new families picking the name.

I see exactly why breeders want to name their kittens. It makes it easier to remember litters and also avoids really silly names. Remember the breeder has to register the kitten and this will be on the breeders records for life whereas you as the pet owner may not like a name and change it within the year the breeder will still have "Mycattery" Fluffy Fluffy Pusskins or worse, some obsenity in another language (the breeder being totally unaware of it's significance,) held at the GCCF or TICA. I know cat/dog breeders are notorious for "silly names" but at least they have chosen them for themselves and often there is a reason.

Breeders often have themes for a certain litter eg thunder, lightening, storm clouds, sun etc. or cartoon characters or song titles or Greek gods/goddesses etc. etc. etc. (Imagine you have a litter with a theme MoonCloud, MoonForest, MoonFruit and Benny, not so great.)

or naming the kittens with the amalgamation of the sire and dam names,

or all names begin with a certain letter in a certain year or certain litter so that a long time after, you can say oh that the kitten was born in 2002 as the letter was F that year. (Fantastic, Fabulous, Fandango, Fashionable and Kitty??)

Pet owners choosing names is OK but what if after a few years of breeding someone wants "Mycattery" Thunder when there already is a "Mycattery" Thunder. Discussion is fine but if the breeder wants to call the kitten something then I think they are well in their rights to do so. Some breeders though are quite happy for someone else to choose names as it gets a bit difficult after a while to keep thinking up new names, while others feel it is part of the fun of breeding, and relish the challenge of names for a new litter.

I think it is fine for the breeder to choose the registration/pedigree name and then the pet owner can call the cat whatever they like after that. Just because it is registered as "Angelic Wings" doesn't mean you can't call it Lucifer or Miss Fluffy Chops if you want.

When we select our names a few factors come in to play to help decide, the character of the kitten plays a huge role in the final choice.

I like to think we have placed the right names on all kittens born here, everyone who has adopted a kitten from us seems very happy with pedigree name.

We're always willing to hear any ideas from prospective new owners!
