I JUST discovered for the first time that I think my lil Roxy is spraying!! I saw her do it and I totally took me by surprise b/c her previous owner never mentioned that this was something that she did. I just got her about a month ago and there is another cat in the house...is this something they do for 'territorial reasons?' Is there anything that can be done to make them stop?? She was previously in a house with a another cat as well and I don't believe she was doing it there though.

unfortunately some females will mark their territory. One of my girls sprayed like crazy but she was entire. Her daughter is exactly the same. The good news is that she is now spayed and living in her new home where there are no other pets. She doesn't spray anymore and doesn't feel need to mark her place.

It might be an idea to let her live where there are no other pets...Sorry that's the only solution I can think of

Yes, I TOO always thought that only males sprayed! I am going to give it some time to see if she continues to do it. If so, I may have to end up giving her up to someone who would only have her in the household. It's NOT at all what I want to do b/c I love her SOOOO much! But, I cannot have a cat peeing all over my apartment and all over my things. It is odd though that she would just start doing it out of the blue after having her for a month or so...and, in her previous home she was with another kitty and apparently never sprayed!

I have a friend with a solitary moggie who sprays. She does it when she sees other cats in their garden. it is her way of saying keep out!
Cats spray to mark their territory particularly if they feel threatened or, in the case of entire females, to let the males know they are there.
I know to us it is unacceptable behaviour but your cat is not doing it to annoy you.
can you think of anything that may have made her feel insecure?
