had an awful night, been awake all night listening to missy growling at the little one, and woke up to a very disturbed frightened little cat (not missy, she put herself next to me from 5-9). i'm still giving missy tlc even though i'm annoyed with her.. but any ideas? the poor thing is terrified, i found him in a tiny ball behind the toaster. i'm not sure what happened over night, i didn't hear any screams but i think she was following him around growling

I think you just have to be patient - they've both had their world turned upside down suddenly so it's a natural reaction from both of them. Please don't tell Missy off - she'll be as unsettled by the change as he is and she's only following her instincts. If Missy looks like she's actually going to physically attack him, then you may need to keep them separated and supervise a gradual introduction but they'll probably just sort things out between them over the next few days. Make sure the new guy has somewhere he feels safe - a box or a carrier, even a separate room - and give them both lots of attention. You'll be surprised how quickly they'll adjust.

I think you just have to judge according to how they behave and how confident he is. Some people advocate very gradual introductions, keeping the new cat/kitten in a wire cage etc but I must admit I'm a bit more of the 'chuck em in together and let them sort it out amongst themselves' type (provided there's no risk of harm of course). When I got the 3 moggy kittens, I was desperate for a few days thinking I'd made a really bad mistake and was going to have to choose which cats to keep but it all settled down after a week and I wondered what on earth I'd been worried about.

thank you i am such a worrier. previously i have had the same situation but it normally settles down after a week or so, i guess i'm a bit more worried about this one as he's so nervous, he adores other cats and greeted them all with a headbut but was met with hostility, which is so sad to see as the poor baby just wants to be friends, he is being very submissive, lying on his back and purring, but he doesn't know what to make of missy at all, he's very scared of her! Missy is out at the minute so i've let him have a wander. I've never been a fan of the cage method myself, i've always thought it would be scary for the one who is cage-bound as a cats instinct is to hide, i don't like to prevent them from hiding if they want to

I agree, give him a "home base" within your house where he's safe and can gain his confidence and try to introduce them gradually without any direct interaction at first. I've fostered a few cats and it's always tricky to make both the newcomer and your own cats feel at home at the same time. I have a separate room set up for my fosters and what turned out to work best for introductions is two pet gates on top of each other blocking the entire doorway to enable the cats to see each other and interact if they want to, but prevent mingling and fighting when I'm not watching. There are plenty of spots in the room where they can sit to either watch the gate or be hidden from view. Using this method, it usually just takes a few days before I can let the cats interact safely, but that depends on the cats involved. Mine are luckily very social and open to welcoming new additions as long as they're friendly, too, so that helps immensely.
