ok this is about our other cat, forest. he is a 14 yr old domestic cat. we've had gizmo for 3 weeks and forest has been a lil grumpy at the new addition. when we first moved, it was just him and he peed on the stove when we weren't home one day i'm guessing b/c we moved him from his home at my bfs parents house.

he was just settling in until we brought gizmo home. during these 3 weeks forest was probably a bit peeved off.

now the problems have started. friday he peed on our duvet cover for our bed. We kno gizmo didn't do it b/c he likes sleeping up there. Then today forest peed on the carpet 3 times without bothering to get up to use the litter box. After the 2nd time we showed him the litter box and then he jumped out ran under the dining room table and peed on the carpet under there.

So is this behaviour old age and he can't control/hold his bladder anymore or is he just peeved off at us b/c of gizmo?

any help is appreciated

Judging from what my 11-year old cat Binky just went through, it is possible that the he might have developed a stress-related cystitis (bladder inflammation). Older cats get this more frequently than younger cats. Binky couldn't hold it and peed everywhere while he was going through this. It was quite different from the marking he had done a few months to weeks earlier though. During his marking period, he was backing up against the wall, tail straight up and shivering and spraying against a vertical surface (usually door, door frame, or furniture). With the cystitis, he just squatted down wherever it overcame him and peed on the floor, looking quite unhappy and crying while doing so. He also jumped out of the litter box and ran into hiding to pee elsewhere, probably because peeing hurt so much and he associated the pain with being in the litter box. The vet said it could have been triggered by stress (I needed to give him antibiotics every day to treat an infected tooth, so that was probably stress enough for him as he kept hiding and running away from me to avoid medication). At first they couldn't find a cause for it, but on second urinalysis it looked like he had struvite crystals in his urine. If your cat has the same, a urinalysis might detect that. In any case, I would take him to the vet. It is not normal behavior and there's a good chance it might have a medical cause, especially if he has gone through a lot of stress lately.

Also: Is he peeing a lot or just very little at a time? If he's peeing very little but very frequently, it might indicate cystitis. Bloody urine might also indicate cystitis. If he is trying to pee but nothing is coming out, he might have a urinary tract blockage. If that happens, take him to the vet immediately as that is a life-or-death emergency situation. Cats can die within hours of becoming blocked without treatment.

well i'm hoping it is not because he is jealous or mad. when he peed on the duvet it was a big round spot. then when he peed on the couch 2 days later it was about medium size, than the 2nd time today was a small amount and than about a couple hours later he peed for the 3rd time and it was a large amount.

2 weeks ago he was going in and out of the litter every 5-10 mins so we took him to the vet. turns out we had caught a minor bladder infection he was starting to develop and he had the struvite crystals in his urine. they put him on the dissolution diet and has been on that since. this past tuesday we took him back for a check up and the struvites were gone but he had some red blood cells in his urinalysis so he is supposed to be on the dissolution diet for 6 more weeks.

an update: looks like forest knows exactly where the litter box is. he went pee in there this morning...and there were no more new pee spots...

that's promising, hopefully it was down to his bladder infection & it's starting to get better. poor boy, must have been painful for him xx

^^ i sure hope so, altho the first time i saw him do it he didnt seem to be in any pain, just irritated. I saw his tail twitch, and it looked like he kicked his own tail, than he jumped to the floor and left a puddle...

well we took him to the vet and had blood work done and a urine culture sample.

got the results back, looks like we paid almost $200 to find out he's pissed off at us cuz of gizmo...

not really sure how to solve this problem, any suggestions?

i've heard that the simplest solution is to get rid of the new person/thing that is making him do this but that is out of the question since gizmo is warming up to us and is part of the family...
