I had to hire someone to install this, but it's finally up. They are a little freaked out by the installation noise and a stranger in the house. I'll wait and see if they get curious...

Wow, very very nice! I'd love to see how your cats like it.

So far they have not gone up on the ledge but they are curious. They stand on the top of the gym and scratch the pole and look up there. I will wait and see what happens. They are on steroids for itching (not sure if it is pollen or food related) and just had their nails trimmed so they may not be their usual selves.

I was thinking maybe a wall shelf would be a good idea between the top of the gym and the shelf in the wall.

Agreed, I was just thinking how it might be difficult to get down from the shelf. Cats don't run/climb down poles very well (usually results in a crash landing).

Putting a cat bed up on the ledge might entice them. What a beautiful gym for them. Raiden loves to climb up his scratching posts, but I've never seen him climb back down. It looks like another shelf up there could help them out a little bit. This really looks amazing!

I was wondering how they would get down myself now that it is in place. I am thinking of adding one of these:

Those are some pretty expensive shelves/cat beds. It appears you're going to have to put a couple of shelves to step out of and away from the top platform of the cat tree, and then back up and over toward the ledge. Can't tell exactly how much room there is between the scratching post and the wall -- enough for a cat to get through? Well, I can tell by the shelf at the top of the post that there would be enough room if the cat didn't want to jump up on the top shelf. This is pretty ingenious! I'd love to get Raiden some shelves to go around the wall from his cat tree. He keeps looking, but there is nothing there and then that would put him over our heads when watching TV. He can sometimes almost fall from walking on the back of the couch, which is 5" wide.

In hind sight I think the cat pole should be lower, below the opening in the wall, but I am not positive. It is mounted into a wooden stud on one side of the bracket and has mollies holding the other side of the bracket. It is very solid and there is no moving it now. Originally I thought they would need something additional so that they could hop down from the top ledge. Possibly two perches. It's hard to know without having the shelves in front of me.

I think you could put a shelf right above the top of that pole, that they could step up onto, then a couple other shelves leading town to the cat tree. Or maybe even better would be having shelves leading down from the other side of that platform. A true "super highway".

Your layout there is actually very similar to what I have with my hi-cat, with the same challenges. I've bought my shelves now (from the same place you are looking at), so just need to hire somebody to put them up.

I am leaning towards getting two of one of the below wall cups (probably the less expensive of the two. This company really gets you with the shipping rates and the first one has a promo on the shipping cost, $14 vs $36):

http://www.catsplay.com/hanging-wall-mounted-cat-cup $110

http://www.catsplay.com/plush-wall-mounted-cat-bed $148

I lucked out and found this new handy man, which I really needed. He is a perfectionist and loves animals. No way I could handle this sort of job. I bought an 8 foot ladder and a stud finder in preparation, but the cat pole sat on my bedroom floor for a good month. I will think about this for a while, maybe until they have another sale. I may need more than the two wall cups.

I'm not sure if you're in the US or UK, but wouldn't Amazon in the US or UK have something just as nice, but cheaper? Thankfully, my hubby is quite handy at creating things -- but I have to push and push him to get anything done!

Thanks for the suggestion Sherry. I was skeptical about the quality I would find on Amazon, but they had some of the ones I was looking at for the same price. BUT, I found this and I like the look better and it will provide a nice step for them.

Yea, the cat clouds are pretty cool looking. They've featured those a couple of times on My Cat From Hell also. I find it hilariously funny though that they needed to photoshop a cat onto the shelf to promote the product though (and to do such a poor job of it). I was actually deciding between those and the cats at play shelves, and decided on the cats and play ones. I think they are a lot more versatile.
