It seems to me, if he wants New Zealand to get back to the way it was, he should get rid of all the humans.
The reason being, every species but humans, adapt to suit its environment. Humans adapt the environment to suit themselves.

The guy is a first class idiot.

Bit of a quandary, I like cats, but I also like birds. Extinct and endangered ones are particularly valuable.
So, I think he has a valid point. New Zealand has a lot of endangered wild life that are eaten daily by cats. New Zealand birds are often flightless and mammals, so cats can have a huge impact on the numbers.
New Zealand needs to weigh up the advantages of having outdoor cats as opposed to having a varied wild life. Its wildlife is in fact unique to the country, so perhaps they do need to cut down on cat freedom and numbers.

Even in the UK, cats gobble up our birds too.

Agree with what he's saying, cats are very efficient predators and a threat to any environment not native to them. The simple solution though is not to let cat's roam outside, something endorsed by many animal welfare groups such as peta.

I agree that the parts of his campaign to keep them inside and to spay/neuter pets are both good, I don't think getting rid of all the cats will ever fly though.

Hmmmm, why not enclose gardens, use cat runs and keep them dafe indoors? Not more harming the birds!

Also I was trying to work out how to set up a peition and came across this one:

ONLY allowed to have dogs that work. All other pets arent allowed!

Get rid of all the cats...... Get overrun with rats..... They climb the trees and steal the eggs....... No more birds anyway!
Seems the best solution is get rid of the birds and let the cats kill the rats.
No more scraping bird poop off the paintwork of your cars...... BONUS!

I have seen cats kill birds just because they can! My husbands cat was really bad about that, he would bring at least one animal onto our porch EVERYDAY!!! He brought a chipmnk once that we had to save a let it back into the tree. He also chased a fox off of our property one night As far as rats, yes they are where ever you are! We have lived in our current house for almost four years and I have never seen a rat........until BB put a dead one on the pillow next to my head I don't think getting rid of cats would solve anything tho. If its not cats killing the birds something else will, that is just the way nature works!

exactly you should intervene in the great circle of life! If there are more birds thats more bird poop, more insects will be eating which definatley would upset the enviroment, more trees will be inhabited which couls also have an affect. Again i really dont think this guy has thought this through lol x
