I came home to this little guy today...

Image

My dad was given this little guy by a friend. He is a Sulcata or known as African Spur Tortoise. Those are the largest land tortoise in the world. They can get up to 2ft in length, 250lbs and can live for 100 years. I'm not sure if we are going to keep it just yet. I been doing my homework and I don't think I will have the yard for him once he is fully grown. But, how cool would that be to have a monster size tortoise running around the yard. :P

Take care,

Olly doesn't really care for it. He smelled it like crazy at 1st and then he was over it. (I do have breaded dragons, so I guess it wasn't a big deal for him) My dogs on the other had are going crazy over it. They want to play with it.

I really would like to keep the little guy but I just don't think I have the room for him to live a happy life.

I'm keeping the little guy. I really have been thinking about it. He gets to stay. I made him a outdoor pen today so when its nice and warm out he can go outside. My boyfriend talked me into it. His name is Michelangelo. Yes, the boyfriend named him. He was a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a child. lol...

Gezz... I'm sure getting myself into a mess.. in a few years time he will be 50lbs

Oh wow, how fab is he/she..
My Mum has 3 tortoises, (normal sized spurthighs)
One is 35 yrs old-we have had it 30 yrs , one is 8 years old and a baby that we hatched last august..
the 35 yr old laid 3 eggs in the garden so we bought an incubater..
only 1 hatched  the other two were still yolk

The older two are in hibernation right now, prob till late feb/early march.
baby tort is pottering around a heated pen.. :D

He really is cool! Its hard to believe he can be so small now and grow to be so big. Since they live for a relatively long time, I was wondering how fast their rate of growth is? Is there some type of commercial food for these guys, or do you feed them veggies/plants?

I saw your bearded dragons in the other pets thread, those are cool too!

I hear they grow 3-4 inches a year. By the time he is 5 years old he should be about 50lbs. These little guys eat grass, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, chicory, watercress, hibiscus leaves and blossoms, mulberry leaves, grape leaves, dandelion greens and blossoms. They can't have anything high protein. They need food that are high in fiber. You have to keep them really warm. Temperature can't get under 60, because hibernation will kill them.
