Hello,
My sister called me up this morning to tell me her sister-in-law needs to find a home for her 9 month old Maine Coon boy. He is registered with all the appropriate paper work, neutered and she says a very loving temperament. He is a house cat and leash trained. She is rehoming him due to an issue with her house share. She asked me if I would be interested in rehoming him.
Eric is now nearly 5 months old and going in for his op on Thursday. We have every intention to get Eric a companion in the next couple of months, but my husband has his heart set on a Snow Bengal. But any how I told my sister we would give it some thought.
I've done some googling on the breed but wondered if anyone here has a Maine Coon or experience with the breed?
Do you think he could be a good companion for Eric or do you think we should hold out for another Bengal?
I know Maine Coons are big cats, do you think he would be a lot bigger than a male Bengal? I know all cats are different and personalities and situations vary from cat to cat from the same breed, but just wanted some different opinions.
Any comments/ advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much x :D

From my experience I have been around 2 maine coon that were about 3 years old and they are huge cats but very docile! Like you said every cat is different but I dont see a problem with getting him I think I would wait until a couple of weeks after his operation before bringing in a new kitty!

I don't like cats except for 2 the Bengal and Maine Coon. Granted I'd come across an occasional cat I'd like but I wouldn't get one because how do I know if it'd grow up to be cool too. But as a breed I like those 2. The Maine Colon is a very chill lap cat and long hair. I preferred an active short hair. I'll give an honorable mention to the Ragdoll they seem similar to a small Maine Colon IMHO.

You mean you mean you don't like Tonkinese :(

There was someone on here who has a Bengal and a Maine Coon... think they were in Australia???

I also knew a breeder who bred Bengals and Maine Coons and they got along pretty good.

Haha IDK until 2-3 years ago I thought all cats were the same. There's Beagles, Rottweiler Pomeranian, Labradors Golden Retrievers and just Cats. You get the idea. In hindsight it wasn't the cats I didn't like but irresponsible owners. I'm allergic too. My neighbors Ragdoll(Dusty) loved me more than them. It'd run right by them to me and sit on my lap everyday after work. I'd grill a lot of fish so he knew to stop by. He'd come inside if I was working on my car and sit on my chair. When I looked up Ragdoll I realized that it acted exactly as described as the breed.

My ex girlfriend loved cats but knew they were out of the question while we lived together. One Christmas I got her a kitten, wrapped it in a box and put a bow on it. She had a heart attack when she opened it  It took a few days to sink in she was allowed to keep it. I have a gift with animals and the cat liked me better. We took it camping and it would follow me like Pouncey does but not her.

I knew Dusty was old and when my ex moved out she took her cat. So I figured it was time I got my own. The Maine Coon and Bengal were what I decided on mainly focusing on attitude. But I like the looks of the Bengal and the short hair. A good friend of my parents had 2 Maine Coons so I do have some experience besides google but I did a lot of research too.

Don't get me wrong your cat is magnificent but I'm still a bit cold to domestic "Cats" in general and attitude is far more important than looks to me. I have know idea the attitude of a Tonk. I'm warming up don't rush me, if you care to explain the attitude I'm more than happy to listen. But one cat is enough. The idea behind the Bengal was to prepare me for a Serval, ACL, Ocelot, Mountain Lion or some other wild cat. As I've always been into wild animals and not domestic pets. I have no fear now I wouldn't have a great relationship with a wild cat but like I said before ones enough and Pouncey isn't going anywhere.

Tonkinese are very similar to Bengals in character, personality and energy level. They just don't have the same spots!

Toby is harder work than my bengal

Like keeping him entertained or behavior issues?

Keeping him entertained... Tonks have very few behavioural problems and very few health problems.

Toby is either asleep or demanding attention/following me around. He is my shadow!

Thanks for the advice. I think we are going to turn it down, not brilliant timing :( hopefully she will find a loving home for him.

Maine coons are big friendly giants, they like to lounge about but my personal experience is that they aren't overly keen on being picked up and cuddled, like a ragdoll. They are a bigger breed and will easily dominate other kitties in the house. I found they aren't particularly bothered about sharing a home, as long as they have their own space.

My dad always found their maine would follow him around like a lap dog, basically would see my dad as the boss. They can easily put smaller animals in their place, again my parent's maine used to wack my aunt's Jack Russel when she got too hyper. I shoudn't laugh but it was funny to see. They like a bit of rough and tumble play and you need to brush them atleast twice a week, even daily when their coats are malting.

Good cats but I find they are opposite to bengals, they like to sit and chill. If you were to rehome home him with you and he got anty with your bengal, give him a separate room.

But keep in mind that all cats have diff personalities but the ydefo like to sit high and lounge.

Thanks for taking the time to advise :) We decided not to rehome the Maine Coon but he has found a loving home. We are holding out for a male snow bengal!

Thanks again :)

No probs, least you took the time to think about rehoming. If you find it hard to rehome him, look for local maine coon breeders, sometimes they have lists of people who are looking to adopt, rather than take a kitten.

Good luck x
