Routine as normal yesterday morning, driving through our village on the way to work, its a long straight piece of road, 30mph limit and is proper busy.
I was following in a line of cars and suddenly a flash of white and the worst bang noise in the world from under my car, i immediately stopped, I knew immediately what had happened, poor little white cat in the middle of the road, I waved the traffic around this poor cat and picked him up and took him to the pavement and bus-stop, he was so badly hit, I knew nothing I could do would help him and he stopped breathing in my arms.

I knocked on a few doors to see if I could find an owner but no-one knew of the cat - all dog owners around here love was one reply, so I called my vets praying that they would be open. I drove the cat to my vets, bless her, my poor vet had deal with me as well as the poor cat. He was micro-chipped so they were going to contact the owner.
I said that the vet could give the owners my telephone number and name if they wanted to talk/shout at me, wring my neck etc.

I feel so terrible, I didn't see him, and absolutely nothing I could do after would have saved him. I hope the owners are ok.

I'm not putting this up for any sympathy but it makes me realise how vulnerable our cats are. My poor cats now are on an outside ban until I come to terms with the event.

Oh no that sounds horrific! Just remember, it was not your fault - you did not see the cat and there wasn't much you could do. You did the right thing by taking the cat to the vet to find the owner, and I hope the owners realise that a lot of people would have just left the poor thing in the road. I can kind of sympathise with you a bit, I've had a few near-misses before and was so shaken up that I nearly couldn't continue driving home. I think if I ever did hit a cat I'd not drive for weeks. I hope you're as ok as you can be

Oh what a horrible situation! I feel for you, and for the cats owners. Please don't beat yourself up too badly, I'm sure that there was nothing you could have done...

I'm really sorry to hear that, it's a nasty shock to most, especially an animal lover. At least he went in peace whilst in your arms, although the accident itself was not nice.

On the way to work one time I saw a tabby cat by the side of the road which had clearly been hit by a car, it was out cold and we couldn't stop as it was heavy traffic so I called the council who called me back later to say it had gone so presumably the owner found it as I'm pretty certain it wasn't alive. We also had a kitten run straight out in the road in front of us one evening but my partner who was probably only doing 30 hit the breaks on time so the puss made it across the road unharmed, my heart was going crazy!!

P.s My cats are thankfully not massively interested in outside, save for looking out the window so I only have to walk one with a harness but I don't think it's safe enough to let them out on their own.
