For those who haven't seen this on my facebook wall, I thought I would share Claudia's (and mine) traumatic experience this week (sorry it's a bit long!)
Claudia was taken to my emergency vets last Sunday as she hadn't eaten or drunk anything since the night before. It was so hot she was getting dehydrated, so she was kept in and put on a drip. Blood samples were taken and in-house tests were done which showed no anaemia and nothing untoward. More blood samples were taken Monday and sent off to test for Corona virus as FIP was thought to be a possibility.
I waited all day Tuesday for the results and didn't get a call, so I rang at teatime and spoke to the young vet who was dealing with Claudia's case. She said "I am afraid it looks like FIP because the count is very high". We discussed PTS Claudia there and then as I didn't want her to suffer any further, but as they were waiting for one more part of the test to come back, it was agreed that as long as Claudia didn't get any worse and start fitting/convulsing etc, we would give her until the morning when the other test would be back.
I worried myself silly all night about Claudia. I got up in the morning and waited for 'that' call. The call I dreaded. By lunchtime I had heard nothing so rang them and spoke to the head nurse, who said "You can come and get her", at which point I thought it must be a body I would be collecting. I just uttered a miserable 'oh'....at which point she said "Yes, the tests are negative (
) ......and she can go home".
At this point, I asked the nurse if she had the right cat and was looking at the right notes. I just couldn't believe that my cat who was dying of FIP and very nearly PTS the night before, was now ready to come home. She assured me it was correct so I went there and then and brought Claudia home. Unbelievable! I still have to take this up with the vets but I have been caring for Claudia and calming myself down first. I was so upset and very angry.
Anyway, my lovely Claudia is still here and is recovering well. Maybe it was something she ate...who knows.....but I will never trust a young vet to read a test result again thats for sure!
