Nightmare last night! Simba jumped on the cooker top and the ring was on!! thankfully had only just been turned on but he jumped about 6ft in the air and then ran round all the wall units, out into the lounge and hid behind the sofa. After dragging the sofa out to get to him I could see he kept lifting his right paw and licking it. Anyway, thankfully there was no damage, I think he was just shocked more than anything, there are no marks or blistering and he was very keen to have his treats last night! Had another look this morning and he is absolutely fine - could have been so different though!! We are so careful after we have used a ring to fill an empty saucepan with water and put it on the hot ring so that none of the boys can get burnt, just didn't expect him to jump up at that time - lesson learned!! x

That always worried me when I saw my friends cats jumping up on the electric cooker.

Time and time again I said to him that maybe it is not such a good idea to let them jump up there, fortunately none of them did actually jump up when it was in use but I think more by luck than judgement!

Oooo, its sending shivers down my spine just thinking about it.

That is why we discourage Max from jumping up on our work tops. It isn't just for hygiene reasons but a safety one too.

Oh what a shock for you (and for Simba).

I was experimenting cooking Ethiopian injera a few years ago which involved having a very hot frying pan but with no oil or anything in it. I turned away for a second and Dolly jumped up on the worktop and stepped in the pan. Luckily I was able to grab her and stick her in the washing up bowl which had cold water in it and she seemed none the worse for the experience but it was a close call.

That's where induction comes in handy... (don't have it yet, still gaz, but the cats won't approach a naked flame so it's ok)

i use gas, and they wont go near a naked flame thank goodness...

I can truly emphasise with you here. It must have been such a shock.

Last winter, when we lived in our old house, our boiler broke so we had to use our open fire and log-burning stove for 2 weeks. Every evening Max would chase Evie around the house and one evening she jumped on top of the log stove. She jumped off immediately and i grabbed her and ran to the kitchen to dunk her feet. She ended up with nasty blisters on two feet which needed cream applying for a couple of weeks. I felt so bad Her paws are fine now except the paw pads are different colours.

I am paranoid now about the oven and my gas fire....

We have learnt now that the best thing to do is fill a pan with water to put on the ring when its turned off, that way they don't stand on the hot ring.

Ah the cold water in a pan idea sounds great. In the short-term we'll probably just do that then.

The glass thing sounded interesting but this must presumably be specially tempered glass as a lot of glass will simply explode if subject to intense heat.
