Hello all

I have installed a web cam in my cat shed. It's a kind of 'Proof of concept prototype' if it works we will be investing in a few more cameras and we will install them in a variety or places both inside and outside of the cat run Anyway, for those of you who are interested, here is the link:

One small problem, the camera can only focus on a small area which means it's very hit and miss to catch Evvie on camera, Evvie is in the cat run from 9am to about 3pm and then from about 6pm-7pm UK time. However, lunch time seams to be best time to catch her playing (between 12-2 UK Time)

Anyway?.Please let me know if you have problems as I would like to try and put a FAQ page together before I put the camera on our web site!

Luke (my significant other ) bought the camera. He ended up buying the ?SOHO wireless internet camera? off eBay for ?150 GBP (approx $276 USD). It is wireless but it also has the ability to work with a 10/100 RJ-45 Ethernet cable, we found that most of the wireless ones did have the dual functionality but they do cost a fair bit extra. We are using it wireless because of the location of the run (at the end of the garden). The camera?s not water proof which is why it?s inside. You can have 64 simultaneous users logged-in, you can set-up user accounts and you can have the camera email you an image and particular intervals etc.

At home we have a 512k broadband Internet connection, a ?wired? Netgear ADSL router (my boyfriend didn?t want his gaming performance effected by a wireless router!) and a Netgear wireless access point. We have 2 PC and the wireless access point wired directly to the router then we have a laptop and the camera connected to the wireless access point.

There are loads of camera?s out there. The smile cams (<a href='http://www.smilecam.co.uk' target='_blank'>Smile Cam link</a>) are v.cheap and v.good but you need a server to run them. The beauty of the IP/Network camera?s (such as the SOHO) is that they have their own built in CPU and web server so you literally have to plug them in to your network, configure your router and that?s it, your up and running. You can then view your camera from anywhere.

I really want the D-Link Wireless Camera DCS-5300W (See <a href='http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=296' target='_blank'>DLink-DCS5300W</a>). It has tilt/pan/audio and zoom facilities all of which are configurable via the internet. It can be configured to email you an image or video footage whenever it detects motion and loads of other stuff, but like I said before, we bought the SOHO camera just to see if we could get it working etc, now that we can we will probably invest in one of the tilt/pan camera?s so that we can get a better handle on the activity within the run. Just one problem, the DCS-5300W costs ?300 GBP (Approx $552 USD) so we?ll have to get saving!

At last!

I was begining to think that you would think I was a wierdo with a phantom non existant cat. but thats not true I do have a cat, she's just very camera shy

I was watching her from work, she was pretty active today, I think she couldn't settle due to the 'muggy' weather, I did notice that she kept walking over to the cat flap but didn't seam to want to go out

My collegues at work joke about it and say that Evvie is more elusive than Osama Bin Ladan! Can't wait to get some additional camera's.

Aha?were on to that idea already, we're actually off to Wolverhampton this Sunday (01/08) to see a 'potential' little fluff bundle. I say 'potential' but there?s no way we'd be able to say no to anything with fur and spots. We're just suckers for anything spotty and leopard like.

Anyway, will let you know how it goes and maybe post a couple of pics (if the breeder says it's OK). Our 'potential' fluff ball is only 7wks old so we are going to have to wait a while before Evvie gets a play mate

Shame, Evvie might not want to play once she gets a bit older - though it would be difficult to find a good kitten that's almost ready, we had to ring around quite a lot of breeders and even then we had to wait what seemed like a lifetime!

I saw eevie asleep in her bed this morning

how cute !!!!!

We've change the camera position to focus on her bed (since that's where she spends most of her time ) We only moved it last night and we forgot to set the focus so it looks a bit 'foggy' ATM. We also bought a second camera (should arrive tomorrow) and plan to have that set-up for Thursday 5/8.

And.............

Couldn't resist the fluff balls we saw on Sunday, wanted to bring them ALL home, the breeder had some beautiful kittens at various ages, not to mention some drop dead gorgeous mums & dads. The one we bought is currently 8 wks old. She should be coming home around 05 Sept......so close...yet so far, the wait is already killing me and it's only been a couple of days . Here's a couple of pics of her at about 4 wks.
