Hi there,

I am new to this forum and new to bengals. We have a 3 year old tabby and just adopted a Bengal. She is 5 months old and a total doll!

We contacted a breeder in Ontario who was looking for homes for rescued bengals and we're thrilled to receive our girl. Her name is Yuki. She has been with the breeder her whole life but the breeder decided she would be better suited to our home. We had originally thought we would get one who was a mix or from a bad situation so we were really lucky to get a healthy kitten ready for a home!

She is a tiny thing, very timid and unsure of us so far. We have had her for 3 days now, she hides a lot of the time still but does sleep on out bed at night :). Her and our tabby Yoshi don't mind each other at all. Hopefully eventually they will be friends!

We hadn't planned on another kitty but we found a stray cat that we had for 2 weeks and after that realized we had room and love for another cat!

We have always wanted a Bengal and are so happy to finally have one :).

She has been sneezing a lot the last 24 hours which does make me nervous but she is eating and drinking well and has no discharge. We noticed a little scratch on her nose so wondering if maybe that is what is bugging her nose. Hopefully it is nothing more!!!! We will watch her closely!

This site is great, have already read a lot of the posts where there is some helpful info!

Hi Danielle. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new bengal! The first thing you should do is take her to a vet to be checked out and start a medical history on her. Hopefully, the breeder provided you with the information she had on the kitty! Sneezing can be caused by the new environment, allergies, upper respiratory infection, etc. A visit to the vet will eliminate an upper respiratory infection -- which means medications. You want to make sure your little gal is super healthy!!!!!

You should have kept your new arrival away from your other kitty for a couple of weeks. You don't know if your kitty arrived with a transmittable disease that you don't want your other kitty to get. And it takes a while for the new baby to get used to her new surroundings and people and she's safer in a smaller room to do that. The fact that she's hiding means she is a little stressed out and scared. With time and patience, she will blend in with your family completely.

Just know that this bengal will be completely different from your tabby. Your bengal will have much more energy, be much more vocal and demanding. Hopefully, you have lots of toys and a tall cat tree as bengals love to climb.

Welcome, and congrats on your new addition.

I don't think the scratch can account for the sneezing at all. Here's the deal as I see it: Many but certainly not all cats will get acclimated to their new homes in 5 days. She could be just a real timid cat that may not have been socialized to humans real well. That is one perfectly plausible explanation. But her being ill could be a factor in this too. Don't forget that hiding, reduced activity level, and avoiding contact are also what cats do when they are ill. So you need to keep an eye on that. The fact that she is eating is certainly good though. If it were me I would definitely get her to the vet within the next couple days and get her checked out. It's the right thing to do anyway when you get a new kitty.

Thanks so much for the info! She went for her check up today and vaccines and all is good. She has stopped sneezing so we don't know what was causing it but the vet suggested switching litter as a possible allergy.
She is in a safe room still, I see now I should have waited to expose her to our other cat. Good thing she isn't sick but I will keep them separate for now just in case.

Thanks!

Glad to hear all is well with Yuki. There is really a lot to learn about the bengal breed. While you have your kitties separated, you need to begin swapping the scents of each of the cats. Find something they have laid on and switch them out to the other cat (or just rub a blanket or towel on the kitty and then let the other kitty have it for a while). Although you have had them together already, this may go quite quickly. Hopefully, things will all settle in soon.
